About Julia

I am a retired English professor with 29 years' experience. My experience includes writing center tutoring as well as teaching freshman and sophomore composition, Introduction to Poetry, Introduction to Fiction, American literature, African American literature, and First Year Seminar (a writing and study skills course for college freshmen). Some of my most rewarding teaching was done in one-on-one conferences with students, in which I was able to work individually with them on all stages of the writing process: pre-writing, drafting, revising, and editing.

I enjoyed positive relationships with my students, many of whom I remain in touch with on Facebook and email. I look forward to applying my knowledge and experience as a tutor in writing, grammar, study skills, and literature.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Study Skills

For five years at Catawba College, I taught a course called First-Year Seminar, in which I helped prepare first-year students for college courses. In the course, students developed skills in time management, note-taking, text annotation and comprehension, and test-taking strategies. The skills are useful for students at any academic level.
