About Amber

Hello! My name is Amber and I'm a life-long lover of learning. I've always been fascinated by languages and literature. My best subjects in school were always reading and English. In high school I took as many English classes as possible, trying to learn as much as possible to prepare for my dream job as an English teacher. I believe that there is no greater skill than having a good command of the English language. Being well-read and well-spoken will get you far, no matter your career field.

I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Valdosta State University in 2013. While in college, I also worked three years as a journalist and editor for our student newspaper. Throughout my college career, I gained more knowledge and experience with writing, editing, literature, and the workings of the English language. As an editor, I gained three years of experience in writing for publication, editing, proofreading, and mentoring. I am also skilled in research and creative writing.

I've always known that I wanted to be a teacher. In my youth, I assisted Sunday school and preschool teachers with childcare and children's lessons. In high school, I often stayed after school to tutor a teacher's child and help with his elementary school homework. I've also mentored high school and college students in areas of writing, proofreading, spelling, grammar and researching.

Over the years, I've learned that the best approach to tutoring is one that allows the tutor and tutee to learn and grow together. I like to show my students something that they did well before addressing what they've done wrong. This ensures that my students do not feel personally attacked, but rather guided gently to the proper way. Often students guided using this approach become able to identify where they have gone wrong in their work before I point it out to them. Thus the teacher grows in experience while the student grows in skill.

This is my goal in tutoring. I want my students to become demonstrably better and more confident in the areas where they feel that they need help the most. I want to watch my students grow until they don't need me anymore, for that is how they show that they have truly learned.

So, come, let's work and grow together. I can't wait to get started!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Grammar

I earned my B.A. in English from Valdosta State University in 2013. My emphasis within the program was newspaper journalism and cross-training in mass media.

I worked as an editor for the university's independent newspaper for three years holding positions of Features Editor, Managing Editor and Editor-in-Chief.
