About Susan

I am a writer. I love wrestling words with hopes they turn out in much more appealing order than where they began.

My career in journalism and as an author allows me to tackle all aspects of "Word Games" ... Stories. Columns. Blogs. Books. Blurbs. Screenplays.

Actually anywhere the alphabet likes to hang out. Having won more than a dozen national awards for investigative reporting and feature writing for USA Today and other Gannett Co., Inc. owned newspapers, I was also an original television reporter on a long-running PBS-TV series "Tennessee Crossroads." Since the 1990s, I have authored nine books.

With triple undergraduate degrees in English, Education and Mass Communications, I also love helping others learn that writing is an adventure every bit as exciting and challenging as the intricacy found in video games, movies and music. Once that realization catches fire, the mundane aspects of writing become a riveting arsenal of weapons to to wield -- with confidence and expectations of soaring success.

Welcome to your All-in-One Tutor. Whatever you want to write, I can help you put the words together and have a good time doing it!

Here's my backstory in print, broadcast and public speaking:

During 17 years in investigative news writing, I learned how to research; write on deadlines; and conduct celebrity interviews. Since establishing my own company, Susan Thomas & Friends, I have done a full spectrum of work, from speechw riting to marketing. I was also an original reporter on PBS-TV's "Tennessee Crosswords."

My golden rule of writing is "Don't tell readers anything, instead, take them on the journey with you." It's simple but if you scan the best-sellers in a bookstore, much more often than not the writing is short, simple and snappy. That is what we will shoot for no matter what type of paper or product you are seeking to write.

On nice weather days, I tutor poolside at my home and then my home office stocked that includes my Desktop Mac and my Laptop Mac so my students and I can write together. (I can also accommodate students at the place of their choosing). I believe the best way to obtain a solid, confident, personal flair for your personal style of writing is a series of sessions either three over two weeks or as many as six over six-weeks. , I suggest a 6-week, two-to-three lessons per week program. Overall, it it up to the student if they wish one session or an extended schedule, depending on their goals.

Not only will we discover the art of writing but also enjoy the crafting of top-flight papers, stories, books, screenplays, songwriting or whatever body of words a student desires.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

I have written speeches for my former boss and mentor, John L. Seigenthaler, founder of the First Amendment Center at Vanderbilt University.
I have spoken to student groups, mainly in Tennessee, for two decades.
I have spoken before groups of many sizes, including the largest of about 5,000 when I was a reporter at USA Today in Washington, D.C. that included many members of the U.S. Congress.
I had to speak to large groups of DOE officials and Lockheed-Martin's top brass to get a federal entitlement law past Congress and the sitting President to get the 2000 law adopted to offer health care to Cold War workers at nuclear bomb production plants across the country.
