About Barb

As a child and teenager, I lived in four foreign countries and learned to relate well to people of all income levels and backgrounds. I am a prolific reader, am well versed in the English language, speak basic Spanish and know some Japanese. As a retired school counselor, I am available mornings, afternoons and some evenings.

My bachelor's degree in Sociology and master's degree in Counseling are a reflection of my interest in understanding and helping others. I enjoy people and relate well to children, teens and adults. As an elementary school counselor for 15 years, I tutored many students and was the ESOL Coordinator for 3 years, working with students from other countries and their parents.

I currently work in the Special Needs Ministry for children at my church in Ormond Beach.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

As an elementary school counselor for 15 years, I worked with many children with ADHD. I accommodated my lessons to keep them interested and allowed movement in the classroom for them. My 26 year old son has ADHD. I worked with him through repetition, patience and with medication to help him succeed academically and personally. He is now a doctoral candidate at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

As an elementary counselor for 15 years, I worked with many children on the spectrum.
I taught classes in which they were a part and worked with them individually to improve their social skills. I also conducted groups for children on the spectrum to help with social skills.

Bible Studies

I have been a student of the Bible for 45 years, since my teen years when I participated in Bible quizzes. I read through the Bible each year and have taken several courses on the Bible through my church. These courses include Reading it Right, Know What You Believe, The Gospel Truth, The Attributes of God, Conformed to His Image and the Doctrines of Grace. I took New Testament Studies in college and have studied religions of the world.

Career Development

I have a master's degree in Counseling and Human Resource Development with an emphasis in student personnel services. My internship was done in the career services office of a private college in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Since that time, I have administered the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, the Strong Interest Inventory and the Campbell Individualized Skills Survey to several individuals. I have done this privately and through the auspices of a Christian counseling agency.

College Counseling

My specialization in graduate school was Student Personnel Services. I interned for an academic year in the Career Counseling Office of the University of Sioux Falls in Sioux Falls, South Dakota during the 1994-1995 school year. I administer the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, Strong Interest Survey and Campbell Individualized Skills Survey to career clients on a private basis and have done so for twenty years.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been employed for 14 years as an elementary school counselor. I teach anger management, conflict resolution, study skills, drug and alcohol abstinence and stranger safety to children ages 5 through 12. I occasionally fill in when a teacher is sick. I have three years' experience as a substitute teacher and 1 year of experience as a teacher's aide in a private, Christian School. I was an aide to 3rd-6th graders.

Public Speaking

I took Public Speaking in high school where I learned how to prepare and deliver speeches. A good speech grabs the audience in the first couple of sentences and then moved on to an introduction, main body and conclusion. During graduate school and in my 15 year career as a school counselor, I gave many oral reports and educated the school faculty on various topics. Last year, I was a presenter and the Florida School Counseling Association State Convention. I spoke on the newcomers club and mentoring program and the elementary school at which I worked.

Religion

I have undergraduate coursework in major religions of the world and in Christianity. I have lived in India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Japan and am familiar with the basic tenets of Judaism, Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism and Christianity. I took New Testament studies at George Mason University and studied Religion at Capital University as an undergraduate.

SAT Writing

God a 630 on the GRE writing test in 1985, coordinated ESOL program at an elementary school for two years, have two years experience tutoring elementary, high school and adults in reading.

Social Studies

I went back to college in 1976-77 to get my secondary teaching certificate in social studies. I have coursework in American History, World Geography and Macro and Microeconomics. I also have a course in Latin American Geography. My Bachelor's degree is in Sociology which relates to Social Studies.

Study Skills

I have a master's degree in counseling and teach study skills to elementary school students at an Elementary School. I have had to be organized to get my B.A. in Sociology with a 3.23 average and my master's in counseling with a 3.75 average.
