New York University (BFA)
Certified in ESOL, ESE, English, Gifted, Reading, and Elementary Education, I have been a teacher for more than 20 years. I was employed by Monbusho, the Japanese Board of Education, and taught English as a Second Language in Japan, Korea, and New York City, my hometown. In Broward County, I have taught Reading to students from kindergarten to 12th grade with emotional and behavioral disabilities.
While living in Japan for 8 years, from 1995 to 2003, I thoroughly enjoyed assisting a wide variety of students of all ages and levels. There, I tutored individuals and small groups at their home, at my home or out at a coffee shop. I also taught large ESOL classes at Suinan Community Center. My business thrived for 5 years with minimal formal advertising; through word-of-mouth I was able to tailor each lesson to meet each student's needs. Many of those students are fluent in English and went on to obtain jobs where they could use their second language regularly.
As a teacher and literacy coach over the past 11 years, I have had the satisfaction of seeing students who couldn't decode at the beginning of the year be able to read by the end of the year as reflected in their scores, which always showed at least one level gain, but more often 2 or more levels of increase.
According to the feedback I've received from both students and administration over the years, my strengths are creativity and encouragement. In addition to standard reading strategies, I have utilized unusual strategies, such as phonics through sensory as well as sign language. Having worked with ESE populations for over 10 years, I am also able to teach strategies for students with ADD or ADHD as well as compensatory strategies for students with dyslexia.
What I love about tutoring is being able to individually tailor a lesson to fit the student's need. It's easy to get to know the student and help her or him along.
Growing up with immigrant parents set the stage early on for me; I was hyper-aware of my mother's grammatical and spelling "nuances" and it became second nature to correct her (she didn't mind). I am an author and freelance editor as well. I have 8 years experience (trained by Monbusho and on the JET Program) in ESOL in Japan, one summer in Korea, one year in New York City and the ESOL certification from FLDOE. I have taught academic writing, grammar, spelling and vocabulary to grades kindergarten through 12.
I have taught at a center for emotionally and behaviorally disturbed students for about 10 years. Students had various diagnoses; Aspergers, ADD, ADHD, OCD, ODD, depression, bi-polar, autistic, etc. My daughters are gifted, my sister and I both skipped 8th grade and were labelled gifted, and I have the Gifted certification from FLDOE.
My schedule is flexible and I am very easygoing. Give me a call. I'd love to help you. Ms. Francine is so kind, My son loves her. She's doing a great job. My son doesn't love read but she was able to grab his attention and keep him focused. After just one week I can say that I've been lucky to have met her.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have ESL certification from the Florida Department of Education and 10 years ESL teaching experience (8 years plus 2 summers in Japan, one summer in Korea, one year in New York City).
I have been a teacher for more than 20 years. I have certifications in English 6-12, Elementary K-6, and Reading Endorsement. I have read and analyzed a lot of literature over the years. I have taught literature and literary analysis in the classroom for many years.
I have taught in Broward County for more than 11 years, primarily as a Reading teacher. I started off teaching Behavior Change Program K-4, teaching phonics on a daily basis. I am certified to teach Elementary Education K-6, English 6-12, and have the Reading Endorsement. Last year I was employed as a Literacy Coach at Cypress Run Education Center. I have tutored many students in phonics over the years. I have taken many reading workshops, including phonics. I've received training and used regularly phonics systems such as Wilson and Rewards. In addition, I have developed my own techniques through trial and error. Some of these are unusual, such as using olfaction and sign language to teach and reinforce phonics, but they have been successful, as evidenced in students' test results.
I have certifications in English 6-12. I am a writer. I have proofread and edited the principal's letters, co-worker's master's papers (4), a friend's book, etc. I have proofread and edited as a teacher for over 20 years and before that, I proofread at other jobs.
