About Arthur

Hello, my name is Art, and I am a Professor of English living in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

I have been teaching College Level English for two years, having spent thirty-plus years as a manager of non-profit organizations where I was responsible for writing annual reports, funding proposals, marketing plans, letters to volunteers and personal essays for publication in monthly newsletters. I have an undergraduate degree in Creative Writing from the University of Baltimore (1977) and a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Florida Atlantic University (2008). My graduate thesis was to write a Novel. I currently teach Freshman English for two local Community Colleges in South Florida. My courses vary from Developmental English, Composition I and Composition II.

Teaching Developmental Education courses in South Florida has provided some unique challenges, for I have lots of students from all Latin America, some of whom have little experience writing in English. I teach basic grammar and sentence structure to help struggling students to recognize how the parts of speech function like building blocks used to construct complete sentences. I use the analogy, “We are in the Construction Business” to convey this notion. Learning to write well is like putting together a 500- piece picture puzzle. Each bit of knowledge is like an individual piece of the puzzle, and students learn by examining each piece and determining where it fits in the ‘big picture’ of a concept, theme or story.

I teach Creative Writing and Critical Thinking using Gamification. I have created many writing games that help students to use language to express their thoughts in original ways. Grammar is not the most exciting topic for young students to master. Most of resist spending time to learn the excessive amount of rules controlling phrases, clauses, types of sentences and parts of speech, not to mention punctuation. The use of writing games helps students to develop the sense that they can convert random thoughts into cogent sentences. My experience has been that once students have gained some confidence – after they’ve experienced the pleasure and satisfaction of self-expression through creative writing - that they are more willing to learn grammar.

I teach Essay Writing by highlighting the importance of Pre-Writing, Brainstorming, Idea Mapping and Critical Thinking, I teach students how to apply abstract concepts – I make extensive use of Roget’s Thesaurus – when composing standard Rhetorical Patterns, including Narrative, Descriptive, Illustrative, Comparison and Contrast, Cause and Effect and Argument that students will be required to write in high school and college. I strongly encourage my students to learn how to conduct academic research using only library digital databases, and I always require students to write research papers on a topic in their major course of study. A writing project is always less challenging when the subject matter ’matters’ to the student. I always make time to review with students the structure of sentences, paragraphs, journals, essays, short stories, and research papers and respond to them in detail with suggestions on how to improve their writing.

As a WyzAnt Tutor, I will teach online, using a computer software that allows for use of shared screen so that students can compose on the screen and I can write my comments on the same screen in ‘real time. Each interactive lesson will be recorded, and the student and parents will have 24/7 access to the each recorded lesson. Online tutoring will offer students and parents the convenience and flexibility to schedule – or re-schedule - the lessons. Finally, taking a lesson online will help students prepare for success as they progress in their schooling: Educational Technology is expanding at an incredible pace, and students will be definitely using computers in classrooms in high school and in college.

Thank you. I look forward to hopefully working with you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have a Master's Degree in Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Florida Atlantic University. I teach students how to apply CRITICAL THINKING practices to their writing projects, including Rhetorical Essay Composition, Short Story and Novel Literary Analysis. as well as Academic Research Papers. I teach students how to conduct Library Research and proper citations using MLA standards.

I also teach business writing, for I worked for 30+ years for nonprofit charities.

Grammar

I learned early in my career that a million-dollar concept was worthless in the marketplace of ideas if the written proposal contained even one grammatical error or misspelling. I tell my students that "Nobody learns grammar unless they have something important to say." The other important thing to remember is that Grammar Rules don't change: once you master them, they will serve you forever.

Writing

As part of my writing philosophy, I teach Critical Thinking Skills to students, for I am a member of the Critical Thinking Society at Broward College. Critical Thinking is a pattern of analysis that anyone can learn to follow. Critical Thinking is just like any Rhetorical Pattern or Action Plan or Plan of Operations. "Think First, Write Second" is my mantra for teaching my students to write down what comes to mind.
