My father, a brilliant lawyer and superb linguist, taught me the glory if the English language, and I can teach you. With over 25 years experience as a writer, communications consultant, tutor, coach, mentor and role model for adults and young adults ages 12 and up, I can help you to develop and define your communication skills.
I have taught classes in writing, public speaking, tennis and photography; given private instruction in writing, public speaking, graphic design, MS Office, basic Windows & Mac usage and tennis; and been a corporate trainer and communication expert for over 20 years.
I was also the Director of a circus program at a private summer camp in PA where I taught hundreds of children ages 7-17 over 20 different circus arts ranging from simple juggling to flying trapeze. The program built confidence, developed skills and inspired growth.
I have also spent several years working as a communications manager for a university, where I was responsible for crafting the messages used by admissions advisors as they interacted and assisted potential students.
As I coach, I believe it is important to motivate my students, regardless of their age, to rise to the level of their capabilities, rather than for me to sink to their current level of learning. As as a writing coach, and as an advocate of proper English usage, I believe in what one of my professors taught me many years ago... that while there are many styles of writing, many reasons for writing, and many applications of both, they are called the rules of grammar, not the suggestions, for a reason. Good writing is the cornerstone to written communication, and regardless of one's field of expertise, if they cannot express themselves properly, no one will ever really know how good they are. My father, a brilliant lawyer and superb linguist, taught me the glory if the English language, and I can teach you. With over 25 years experience as a writer, communications consultant, tutor, coach, mentor and role model for adults and young adults ages 12 and up, I can help you to develop and define your communication skills.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a BA in English, a MA in Communications, and I have been a corporate trainer and coach for may years. I am confident I can provide the services and assistance requested.
I received certificates in Photography, Advanced Photography, Black & White Darkroom Techniques and Advanced Black & White Darkroom Techniques from the Germain School of Photography (now a division of The Center for Media Arts in NYC) in the 1980's. I also taught an advanced B&W techniques adult education class at that time, and was one of the few active students allowed to teach while still enrolled. During that time period, and for several years thereafter, I was also a freelance photographer in NY, working with three modeling agencies and several fashion designers.
I have been a corporate trainer for more than 20 years, and have presented countless workshops, seminars and interactive presentations throughout the US and Caribbean.
I have also presented numerous team-building workshops throughout the Northeast U.S., been a freelance emcee for 20+ years, and spent 10 years as the entertainment director and emcee for a singles resort in Connecticut.
I was the head tennis pro for Gramercy Tennis Club in NYC for four years, followed by two years teaching in the Caribbean. I have provided private, semi-private and group lessons as an independent instructor for more than 20 years and have experience with students from 10-80 years old, groups as large as 40 at one time, and with the hearing, visually and mobility-impaired.
I have coordinated all manner of tournaments and social tennis events, and can teach in both English and French.
After playing as starting setter for four years in high school and as a member of my college intramural team (there was no men's volleyball college team), I returned after college to coach my old high school team for several years while also playing as setter for a competitive team in the NYUPVL (New York Urban Professionals Volleyball League). It is NYC's largest league, with more than 250 teams during the winter season.
