In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My professional experience includes working with students who struggle with higher level math. I find that most students are more than capable, they lack the basic math principles: ie- adding and subtracting positive and negative integers, working with fractions, decimals and percents's. What I do is focus on the basics, then show them how to apply it to the higher level classes like algebra 1 and geometry.
I am Florida State Certified in Middle school language arts and have taught professionally in Broward County. I am up to date with the new Florida assessment tests for grades K-12, and the new emphasis on writing. The focus of my lessons is on sentence structure and essay writing.
