About James

I love programming! Do you? Do you want to? If you're looking for a patient and thorough tutor with a passion for both computer science and education, look no further! With me you have the advantage of a tutor that has both industry experience in software engineering and recent university academic and teaching and tutoring experience.

Have you tried online tutoring? It's surprisingly effective with WyzAnt. Their screen-sharing, collaborative whiteboard, chat feature and optional audio/video (like Skype) make working together online painless. The online nature eliminates problems with time zones, travel time and in-person meeting logistics, etc. I'm a night owl so I'm available most days from early afternoon into 4 or 5am Eastern time.

A little about me and my own experience level. I've been a computer programmer since I was 12 years old (most of my life) and have had a passion for both writing software and teaching others how to code.

When I was younger, I thought I was going to be a rock star, a writer, or an artist. Instead, I became a combination of all three -- a Software Engineer!

If you're an undergraduate and just starting out as a coder, I can help, as working with those new to programming is my speciality. I have specific experience in teaching introductory and foundations courses (in C and C++) .

My specialties include C, C++, and COBOL, though I have exposure to most major programming languages (Objective C, Python, Perl, Java, etc) and markup languages like XML and HTML.

I've also got many years of database experience in industry and academia. I've taught and tutored at the university level both online and in person and have even taught entire courses online!

Even if you're a graduate student looking to brush up on coding skills or learning more efficient ways to code and test, I can help. If you're a researcher looking for help editing and writing conference and journal papers, you may find my services of value. I've written a masters thesis, a doctoral dissertation, about a dozen conference and journal papers, and I enjoy researching and co-authoring papers in a variety of sub-disciplines.

Professionally, I was a software developer/engineer/systems analyst in the South Florida area for more than 20 years, with clients like Home Depot, Office Depot, Hewlett-Packard, Sony, Army/Airforce Brookstone, and many other traditional and e-commerce companies. Chances are very good that you have encountered my software somewhere along the way if you've ever shopped online, ordered from a catalog, or shopped in a retail store.

I earned a MS and PhD in Computer Science from Florida Atlantic University, but have also attended Broward College in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, and Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. While all of my publications are computer science-related, the subjects have ranged from healthcare systems to vehicular ad hoc networks (VANET) to ocean engineering information management systems to project management. My doctoral specialty was in "autonomic software systems" -- self-adaptive software that is self-healing, self-protecting, self-optimizing, and self-configuring.

While in graduate school at FAU, I was a TA, tutor, mentor, and adjunct instructor for undergraduate and graduate students. I've taught "Introduction to Programming in C" and lab sections for "Foundations of Computer Science" and TA'd and tutored for Data Structures, Analysis of Algorithms, etc. I've also graded for courses like Object-Oriented Software Design, Python Programming, iOS Programming, Advanced C++, and others. I've guest lectured for Principles of Software Engineering, Software Requirements Engineering, and Programming Languages.

If you are looking for a friendly and patient tutor that not only has the schooling and the business experience, but the passion for sharing it, look no further!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

My math coursework extends to Calculus II, Discrete Mathematics, Stochastic Models and Differential Equations. I have an AA, BS, MS in Computer Science, and teach computer programming at Florida Atlantic University while I work on a PhD in the same subject. Computer scientists and especially computer programmers inherently have a strong intuitive knowledge of Algebra since most programming languages are modeled after its structure.

C

I taught and tutored Introduction to Programming (C) at Florida Atlantic University, including online courses. My BS, MS, and PhD are in Software Engineering, as has been much of my professional career (20+ years). I specialize in teaching and tutoring brand-new programmers and helping struggling programmers. You may very well end up loving programming by selecting me as your tutor!

C++

I taught and tutored Introduction to Programming (C) and Foundations of Computer Science (C++) at Florida Atlantic University, including online courses. I also tutored and TA'd for Data Structures, Algorithm Analysis, Object-Oriented Software Design, and Operating Systems. My BS,MS,and PhD are in Software Engineering, as has been much of my professional career (20+ years). I specialize in teaching and tutoring brand-new programmers and helping struggling programmers. I especially enjoy helping students learn how to decompose programming assignments into manageable chunks which is a valuable approach in the professional world. You may very well end up loving programming by selecting me as your tutor!

COBOL

I first learned COBOL at Broward College in Davie, Florida in 1988. I worked at two internships using that language, and then from 1988 to 2009 in industry, exclusively using COBOL. I have coded applications and large integrated ERP systems used by Hewlett Packard, Sony, Office Depot, and nearly 800 of the top 1000 retailers in direct and e-commerce. I have two published papers about COBOL projects I have worked on.

Computer Programming

I have been a computer programmer for most of life starting as a pre-teen. After attending RPI, BC, and FAU, I went on to have a long career as a software engineer in industry. Later, I returned to university life to at a new BS, MS and PhD in Computer Science and Engineering, attending BC, Tsinghua Universityl and FAU. I have been exposed to most major computer programming languages over the year, specializing in BASIC, COBOL, SQL, XML, etc in industry and now C, C++, Java, and others in academia. I have taught and tutored both C and C++ at the collegiate level in person and online. If you're looking for someone who loves to code and can possibly help you love it too, you've found him!

Computer Science

I've been a programming for most of my life and most of my 20+ year career was a software engineer. I recently returned to university life and graduated with a Master's and PhD in Computer Science, specializing in Software Engineering, Software Evolution, and Software Reengineering. I've taken most Computer Science courses and taught or TA'd for several. If you want a tutor that lives and breathes Computer Science, you've found the right one. If you love (or hope to love) computer programming, look no further!

General Computer

I have been a computer user since 1981. I have been around for the birth of the personal computer, the internet, and the software engineering disciplines. I have used all kinds of personal computers and operating systems but also a variety of mainframes (IBM, HP, etc). I have a AA, BS and MS in Computer Science from Broward College in Fort Lauderdale and Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. I am about midway through a PhD in the same subject and teach & tutor computer programming to undergraduate students.
