I have worked as a substitute teacher in Broward County for 5 years grades K-12. I have also worked with adults who needed help speaking English. I have tutored English, Writing, Spelling, Grammar, and Reading for 6 years. I like to help people. I am very patient and will spend as much time as needed in one area before moving on to the next topic. I know ASL and have worked with hearing impaired children as well.
I feel that tutoring allows me the chance to work one-on-one with children who need extra help. I think it's important to make children feel comfortable reading or writing. That would be my goal. Help th children that I work with to set small goals that lead to bigger goals until they are comfortable reading and writing. I love reading and getting captured by books, I like to share my love of writing and reading with children because I think it's such an important skill. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have worked with children K-6 grades for five years as a substitute teacher in Broward county schools. I have worked in Atlantic West Elem, Margate Elem, Tamarac Elem, and Margate middle school. I work with students in K-6 in multiple subjects. When in college at FAU I took Education classes and worked with special needs students at the Palm Beach School. The whole school was a center school for children in pre-school all the way up to high school. I worked with children in the 6th grade level.
I have experience working with young children who are hearing impaired as I know ASL. When I was in high school I took ASL because I wanted to learn a language that would help me communicate with people who are deaf and/or hard of hearing. I subbed at Tamarac Elem where they have both deaf and hard of hearing students. I was hired with ASP Tamarac Elem and worked with a child who is deaf and has Autism. I worked with him for a year in After School Programs. I helped teachers who worked with deaf and hard of hearing children because I know ASL and they did not.
I have worked with children and adults with study skills for three years successfully. The tips I gave them helped them pass the classes they were taking. One of the students I worked with had an F average in reading and his English classes. I worked with him for three months twice a week and he was able to graduate high school on time earning B's in both subjects. He is in college now. I worked with a fifth grader at Tamarac Elementary school two years ago who needed a lot of help with homework in general. He would confused with work that he would "forget to do". We started to write everything down and check them off as we finished one assignment after another. Usually students that I tutor don't realize that they have bad study skills. I make an agenda for them to follow and I help them set up goals that helps them not feel overwhelmed.
