The most exciting part of my job is seeing someone come into the first class as a complete beginner and seeing them leave using a few phrases in the target language. When I hear back from past students telling me how much their lives have changed as a result of speaking a new language, I feel truly fortunate to have this job.
The most common question that I get from clients is: "How long does it take to learn a new language?" There is no on-size-fits-all answer to this question as it all depends on previous & current contact with the language, time that will be dedicated to classes, how much the student is willing to do outside of class, and many other factors. Students should start to see progress from the first class and should be able to use short phrases in the new language within the first four weeks. Ideally, students should meet with their language instructor at least twice a week as well as practice outside of class. Most of my beginner students are able to communicate in the target language within 3 to 6 months. Full fluency in a new language is a process that takes years and I recommend spending time in a country where the language is spoken. Don't be fooled by people who promise that you will be "fluent in a new language in 10 days". Second language acquisition research shows that it takes years to achieve a full command of a new language. Also, just because a person speaks a foreign language it doesn't mean that they are qualified to teach effectively.
Always check the credentials of your language instructor and make sure that they have the right combination of training, experience and personality that will really help you achieve results. Always check your instructor's qualifications, experience and credentials before hiring. Ask questions and find out if the instructor's personality and teaching style will be a good match. A great instructor will also ask a lot of questions in order to really get to know your learning style, interests and objectives. Don't be afraid to negotiate the hourly rate with your instructor if you think you have found a perfect match but your budget is limited. I am a passionate language instructor committed to helping you reach your personal and professional goals. I have been teaching for more than 20 years & have a Master's degree in Bilingual Education. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
