Tutoring to make connections in learning
As I matriculated through K-12, I often found myself struggling. It was not because I could not do the work--instead, it was because so many of my lessons were taught the same way. I loved reading and could read just about anything put before me, but, for a number of reasons, my comprehension level was not what it should be. As I matriculated through K-12, I often found myself struggling. It was not because I could not do the work--instead, it was because so many of my lessons were taught the same way. I loved reading and could read just about anything put before me, but, for a number of reasons, my comprehension level was not what it should be. Math came easily to me, but because of my limited reading comprehension, I did not do as well with my word problems. The more I learned and was exposed to, however, the better I understood what I read. I later learned various techniques to help me to increase my reading comprehension, and though it took a while I eventually became successful in each of my subjects.
The many struggles that I experienced as a child helped me decide to become a teacher. It is through my shortcomings that my love of learning flourished, and my desire to help those who also struggle like me. What inspires me is the look of joy that students get when you know that they understand a skill being taught. It's like I can see that light click "on" as the smile lights up their faces. That look alone makes it all worthwhile.
Living by example has been my mantra. One of the things that I have always lived by is the poem regarding children learning what they live. One way to help children become more successful is by setting examples for them to follow. By showing them my love for learning, reading as well as using grammar to get my point across will hopefully be enough of an example to encourage success within them.
Aside from earning a degree in elementary education it was working with students both in the classroom as well as outside in tutoring sessions before and after school where I was able to hone the skills acquired. To me it makes no sense for there to be children who cannot read. In elementary school is where the basic foundations of learning begins and it is my hope to utilize my entire bag of tricks to help them to hone their own skills to increase their success potential.
For nine years I worked in the elementary classroom where I was able to develop ways to enhance learning with my students. I have have very few students who have failed in the process but I believe that all children can and will learn. Raising the level of expectation to the moon can help them to at least reach the stars.
My grandson was having trouble with fractions, especially multiplying mixed fractions. Linda worked with him on reviewing adding and subtracting fractions during this lesson. He found the lesson very helpful. His comment after the lesson was that she made it seem very simple. Looking forward to more good results!Beverly, 8 lessons with Linda
Excellent, knowledgeable, and patient
Linda is tutoring my 9 year old 4th grader with reading. She is very patient with him and tries her best to teach him a manner that is suitable for his learning style. She prepared his lesson plan in advance based on the difficulties that I brought to her attention. As she was tutoring him, she was diligent in observing what additional needs that he would need in order to be successful.Quiana , 3 lessons with Linda
