About Linda

As I matriculated through K-12, I often found myself struggling. It was not because I could not do the work--instead, it was because so many of my lessons were taught the same way. I loved reading and could read just about anything put before me, but, for a number of reasons, my comprehension level was not what it should be. Math came easily to me, but because of my limited reading comprehension, I did not do as well with my word problems. The more I learned and was exposed to, however, the better I understood what I read. I later learned various techniques to help me to increase my reading comprehension, and though it took a while I eventually became successful in each of my subjects.

The many struggles that I experienced as a child helped me decide to become a teacher. It is through my shortcomings that my love of learning flourished, and my desire to help those who also struggle like me. What inspires me is the look of joy that students get when you know that they understand a skill being taught. It's like I can see that light click "on" as the smile lights up their faces. That look alone makes it all worthwhile.

Living by example has been my mantra. One of the things that I have always lived by is the poem regarding children learning what they live. One way to help children become more successful is by setting examples for them to follow. By showing them my love for learning, reading as well as using grammar to get my point across will hopefully be enough of an example to encourage success within them.

Aside from earning a degree in elementary education it was working with students both in the classroom as well as outside in tutoring sessions before and after school where I was able to hone the skills acquired. To me it makes no sense for there to be children who cannot read. In elementary school is where the basic foundations of learning begins and it is my hope to utilize my entire bag of tricks to help them to hone their own skills to increase their success potential.

For nine years I worked in the elementary classroom where I was able to develop ways to enhance learning with my students. I have have very few students who have failed in the process but I believe that all children can and will learn. Raising the level of expectation to the moon can help them to at least reach the stars.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

CLAST

I am qualified to tutor the CLAST because I have taken the it and passed. Please note scores acquired: Essay-10, Math-306, Reading-296, Writing-324. In conjunction with the above I am also certified to teach and the skills that I use with instruction can be incorporated to teach the CLAST.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am certified to teach elementary education 1-6. I have taught for nine years and along with that I worked before and after school to assist in the success of not only my students but other students who needed help mastering their skills. Learning is universal with starting with the basics and building upon those foundations. I do not have early childhood certification; however, I have had students with less than Kindergarten-level skills and I worked with them to get to the point of being more successful than in the past.

Grammar

As an elementary school teacher I taught all subjects including grammar. Regardless of your level grammar is the same. If it's day to day conversations or prep for passing a test I can help you.

Study Skills

My qualification in study skills is varied and was gained from teaching elementary school grades 3-5 over the course of 9 years. I also tutored before and after school. The skills involved take more than just reviewing information but also include things such as time management, a clear space for study, practice, clear directions of what is needed to study.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary was an area that many of my students had problems grasping the concept. Reading and Vocabulary go hand-in-hand. If they understand the vocabulary the have a better chance in reading and understanding what they read. By building the vocabulary and their background knowledge on the specified topic they will be more successful in their reading tasks.
