About Michelle

I became a tutor a little ove four years ago. I didn't start off as many did, through an agency. I couldn't afford my college education and education meant everything to me. No one in my family had ever been to college except for me. So it was more important to me to finish than anything else in life.

I worked two jobs while going full-time to school and it was never easy, but it was always worth it. I enjoy learning and I enjoy using my time beneficially.

A friend of mine knew of someone who had a child who needed help with some reading and writing skills in the first grade. I offered to tutor this person not knowing they would change me.

He was a six-year-old autistic kid who, over time, became my hero. It started off with a fight every afternoon trying to get him to sit at the table and get through simple matching card games to settle him in. These cards were picture cards that I used to get him to be comfortable with speaking. Then we would move to cards with just word on them, then gradually increased to cards with short sentences he would use everyday. His enthusiasm was astonishing. He went from putting up a fight to sit down, to putting up a fight for more work.

I never thought about becoming a teacher until the last day I spent with him. He looked at me and said, "I'll never forget our time. You make me feel normal. You make me feel smart, thank you." It was tough not to shed a few tears after that. Then it hit me, I could make this kind of difference in more than one child's life. I could give kids the thing that I had been working so hard for, the thing that made people feel powerful; education.

I started to tutor a wide range of ages from 6-21 years of age. College English courses, 3rd grade writing and reading skills and much more. It's hard to put a tactic used. Every student is different and it is about knowing your student and knowing your client that makes the tutoring process successful.

I currently hold a Bachelors Degree, but I am attending graduate school to receive my teacher's certification. I plan on tutoring even after graduate school, wether it be volunteer or through the school system.

I'm ready to make people feel confident throughout their school years.
