About Stephen

Helping students to have that "AHA!" moment is something I have always enjoyed. I know that the subjects I love - namely high level math and physics - can be difficult to grasp at first, but I believe that anyone is capable of mastering these subjects. I firmly believe this after my participation in the Emory Tibet Science Initiative (ETSI), a program which gave me the opportunity to travel to India to teach introductory physics courses in Tibetan Monasteries. Seeing how well people with no scientific background were able to understand difficult physics ideas showed me that any student can understand a complex subject, as long as they have a teacher willing to work with them. My experiences in ETSI, along with the four courses I taught in graduate school and my honors degree from the University of Georgia, make me confident that I can help any student struggling in math and science.

The subjects I specialize in are physics and any type of math up to integral calculus. I would be happy to help students prepare for standardized tests as well, including SAT, GRE, and MCAT Physics.

My personal teaching style is to first help a student recognize their strengths and focus on areas in which they need work. I like to help guide students through problems, then see how they handle problems on their own, gradually helping them to solve more difficult problems without assistance.

In addition to my minor in Mathematics, I have spent a great deal of time working with high level mathematics. In particular, I was able to help teach a course on mathematical methods in physics. I also have tutored students at several levels in math, from algebra to calculus.

I have taught 5 different college level physics courses, all of which involved significant office hours commitments, so I have well over 100 hours of 1 on 1 instruction with students. I have also tutored students independently in physics.

Thanks for taking the time to read all of this, I look forward to hearing from you so that we can set up lessons to help you succeed!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 2

I provided volunteer tutoring to students in both high school and college for algebra and higher level math courses. In addition, I taught multiple algebra and calculus based physics courses as a graduate student.

Calculus

While earning my degree in physics, I had to work actively with calculus on a daily basis. I also had to help teach calculus based physics courses. Additionally, I have provided calculus tutoring to students in the past.

Physics

I earned a Master's degree in Physics from Emory University. During this process, I taught or co-taught 5 different physics courses, both lab based and classroom based. For every course, I had to hold office hours to answer students' more in-depth questions.

Precalculus

I had to frequently work with precalculus and calculus principles while earning my physics degrees. I also have a minor in mathematics from UGA, and a great deal of tutoring experience in all types of math up to college level calculus.

Trigonometry

I have taken and even helped teach several trig-based physics courses. Additionally, I have provided a great deal of trig tutoring, and even used trigonometric principles in my own graduate level physics courses.

Excellent! — Stephen is an excellent tutor! His explanations were clear and broke down the equations in a way that made sense to my daughter. She normally becomes very frustrated with math, but his guidance helped her grasp the material quite easily. Moreover, she said she appreciated that he never talked down to her, but treated her in a way that gave her more confidence. I felt his help was an investment wel ...
