About Celeste

I feel teaching is a privileged position that demands humility as much as respect. It is crucial that teachers recognize the power inherent in their role and are self-reflective about their actions. In my teaching, I work to be mindful of my position as a role model of the kind of leadership I strive to promote among my students. Teaching is about building self-confidence, sportsmanship, and a passion for learning. I know I am successful as a teacher when students strive to be better at their skills and can grow in working together as a team. I hope to challenge them to reach for the stars and to never let anyone stand in the way of their dreams.

In my tutoring, I hope to encourage students while given them strategies that they can use in the classroom to support success. I feel it is important to connect to students interest and to make learning fun. When working with reading and writing I use a multi-sensory approach called Orton Gillingham. Teaching begins with recognizing the differing needs of learners. I feel it is important to connect to students interest while giving them strategies to be successful. My goal is to teach students when to ask clarifying questions to feel successful in the classroom while also giving them skills to support decoding, reading context clues and building comprehension skills.

I have been in the education field since 2001. My first seven years, I worked with the public special education programs in Durango Colorado. Here I worked with students following the goals of their IEP to create lessons to support each students individual needs. After that I was given the opportunity to work with English Language learners in Waipahu Hawaii teaching reading and math to students grades K-3. For my last 5 years, I have taught traditional 1st grade with a focus on supporting students with autism and other learning disabilities to feel successful in traditional public school. My passion is to teach students to read and write and given them the tools to feel successful in their learning environment. To teach is to touch a life and make a difference.

The traditional math that many of us learned growing up has quickly changed in rigger causing many families to question how to break down math and support home learning. My goal as a tutor is to support the common core skill set while giving students and families the tools to feel successful for every day math homework.

Reading and writing are my most favorite skills to teach. When we create a fun learning environment students are more eager to try new skills. I use an Orton Gillingham multi-sensory approach. My goal is to teach students when to ask clarifying questions to feel successful in the classroom while also giving them skills to support decoding, reading context clues and building comprehension skills.

In 2014 I wrote my own multi-sensory phonics curriculum at AXL Academy in Denver, Colorado using technology, hands on learning, and student practice activities. I feel that the break down of phonics skills supports students in learning to decode words and use context clues to help them better understand what they are reading, but also supports spelling for the writing process.

My goal as a tutor is to support students at their own ability level while helping them feel successful and gain confidence to reach their personal goals as a learner. If your child needs support in reading, spelling, and phonics and would like to try a more hands on approach for learning I hope that you will give me the opportunity to work with your student. Please schedule a time that works with your schedule and let the learning begin.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Learning is Fun

Our 7 year old is not US born so language and reading skills have been slow developing and struggled to maintain school pace. Celeste has a unique approach that is "holistic" and very fun for our little one. At the previous report card she was losing ground and upon speaking with teacher it was very possible she would not advance to next grade as is. Celeste time and method has been huge boost a
