About Dottie

I graduated from University of West Florida in 2010 with a Master in Education as a Reading Specialist. I have tutored for four years and decide a year ago that I needed more training. Most of the students had behavior problems that were either caused by their struggles with reading or were affecting their self esteem and willingness to accept help. I decided to get a certificate in Special Education which I will complete in December. I feel qualified now to help children with special needs and reading issues. I hold a teaching certificate in Florida which qualifies me to teach Reading K-12 and Elementary K-6.

I have tutored all ages of students from kindergarten through middle school and occasionally high school. I screen every child at the beginning of our sessions to determine which of the five core reading skills is causing them the most problems and that is where we start. It is usually reading comprehension, phonics and decoding. Now I can also use what I have learned about behavior modification to improve my program. If you child is diagnosed ADD/ADHD, Asperger's, dyslexic or has attitudes about school that are affecting his/her ability to learn, I can help.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I am a reading specialist and I have just completed a certification in Special Education which qualifies me to working with children with special needs like ADHD. I also have worked with children with ADHD as a tutor and an interventionist.

Dyslexia

Dyslexia is not a single diagnosis. It is often applied to students with reading disabilities. The theory is that their brain has difficulty with the normal pathways for reading so the student needs to have an intense intervention to help the brain make a pathway that will substitute for the normal pathway. I am certified in reading k-12. I just finished a certificate course in Special Education. I have a Masters in Education.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am certified in Florida to teach Reading k-12 and elementary education k-6. I worked with elementary age children as a tutor, interventionist, and as a director of reading camp. I have just recently finished a certificate course in Special Education that qualifies me to teach young children with special needs.

Phonics

I am a reading specialist. I have a MEd. Phonics is one of the five core elements of learning to read. I have tutored children in reading for the past four years.

Reading

I am a reading specialist. I have worked with students of all ages who are struggling with reading. My preference is for struggling young readers who are just learning so we can get them on the right track before it is too late. I am certified in the State of Florida to teach reading k-12.

Special Needs

I am certified in reading k-12. I just finished a certificate course in Special Education. I have a Masters in Education. Most of the students I have tutored in the last 4 years where diagnosed ADD or AD/HD or had emotional problems and learning disabilities.

Study Skills

I have a study skills curriculum that I used when tutoring for Club Z. It includes planning and organizing and, reading comprehension among other things, It is very good. Usually takes about 8 one-hour sessions. It was written for older students. I modified it for elementary age. I also taught it to a college student.
