My teaching certification includes Mathematics, Spanish, and French. I tutor across a number of disciplines, but take my greatest pleasure in bringing an understanding of mathematics and foreign language to students struggling in those areas.

I have taught Mathematics at both the community college and high school levels and have tutored math privately for over a decade. While teaching at the community college level, I also worked in the college's Math Tutoring Center and for Disability Support Services. In both centers, I worked one-on-one with students not only in all levels of math, from basic remediation through Calculus, but also in standardized test prep, including GRE, SAT, and ACT, and instruction in the use of the TI-84 Calculator. While working in the Math Center, I completed the coursework necessary to become fully certified in Mathematics.

I also taught Spanish and French for over a decade in public schools in Florida, Georgia, and Virginia. I spent two summers in Spain and France and a semester as an exchange student at the University of Lima in Lima, Peru. Since I am not an native speaker of any language other than English, wherever my students are in their studies, I have been there.

In addition, I have taken coursework in Portuguese, Russian, Italian, Japanese, and Latin.

I am patient and thorough and adapt my teaching style to the needs of each student. I encourage my students to strive for understanding as opposed to simply memorizing enough to get through a test and I will do whatever it takes to ensure that each of them reaches his or her highest potential. I welcome and have worked with students from high-school age through empty nesters and thoroughly enjoy the one-on-one interaction that tutoring provides.

I look forward to working with you.

Art

Art History,

Art History

Between the cultural anthropology, historical archaeology, humanities, and history course work I took (over 100 graduate and undergraduate hours), I was exposed to a great deal of art history, from the classical art and architecture of the Greeks and Romans through Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, and the various periods of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. My particular interest is architecture.
Needlework

Needlework

I can knit and crochet, but devote most of my energy to cross stitch, crewel embroidery, needlepoint, hairpin lace, and smocking. I am currently learning tatting and lace making. I have been doing this type of work for approximately forty years.

Business

GRE,

GRE

I worked for several years in a college math tutoring center where, in addition to tutoring the various subject areas we also assisted students in preparing for the math portions of the SAT, ACT, GRE, and CLAST. I have also tutored math privately for more than a decade. Whatever your deficiencies in math, I am certain I can help you achieve your highest score possible.
Macroeconomics,

Macroeconomics

I have an MA in cultural anthropology and taught at the community college level. My classes Intro to Cultural Anthropology and Peoples of the World included significant material in national and global economics. I also completed coursework in economics at both undergraduate and graduate levels and made As in those classes.

Corporate Training

ESL/ESOL,

ESL/ESOL

My major in undergraduate school was Latin American Studies, which required, among other things, coursework in French, Spanish, and Portuguese. I spent a semester abroad in Peru and two summers in Spanish. Because of my interest and experience with languages (additionally, Italian, Russian, and Japanese) and extensive travel throughout the world, I have always found it very easy to work and communicate with people from other cultures, even when there was initially a language barrier.

Proofreading,

Proofreading

I gained experience proofing scholarly papers beginning in graduate school when part of my job as a grad assistant was proofing theses and dissertations. I also transcribed and proofed papers for my major professor for publication. I continued proofing on the side after graduate school. As a community college instructor I required grammatical accuracy in the papers submitted by my students even though I was teaching anthropology and many of them thought that was asking "too much." Spell/grammar check doesn't catch everything and really isn't geared for nuance. Whatever your proofreading need, I am sure I can handle it to your satisfaction.
Spanish,

Spanish

I majored in Latin American Studies, was an exchange student in Peru, and spent two summers in Spain. I taught both Spanish and French in the public schools and am certified in both languages. I speak Spanish, but I am not a native speaker, so I've been where you are and I'm sure I can help.
Statistics

Statistics

A class in statistics is often required for a variety of disciplines not related to math or science, including psychology, business, anthropology, economics, and public health, and an understanding of basic statistical principles is necessary to comprehend the research of others and to produce a statistical analysis of your own work. I have tutored students in statistics for over a decade; whether you difficulty is in analyzing normal distributions or hypothesis testing, I am sure I can get you back on track.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

Algebra is one of the most important subjects you will ever take because it teaches abstract thinking, which, in turn, will help you to think more deeply about every other subject you ever take. Because of that, algebra is my favorite math subject to tutor. I have over a decade of experience tutoring math at all levels to students ranging from 4th graders to empty-nesters attending college for the first time. Whatever problems you are having with algebra, I am sure I can help you be successful.

Whatever you are having a problem with, I'm sure I can help.
Calculus,

Calculus

Studying calculus is like entering a whole new universe that you didn't even know was there, and for me it was one of the most exciting and memorable subjects I ever studied. But for many students, especially those who are taking calculus to fulfill requirements for medical, dental, veterinary, pharmacy, or business school, the prospect of taking calculus can be truly daunting. Take heart! I came from a social science/humanities background and fell in love with calculus and I can help you master it, and maybe even love it a little bit, as well.

Geometry,

Geometry

Geometry is the true complement of algebra; algebra teaches abstract thinking, but geometry teaches logical thinking. It's one thing to state a conclusion that seems obvious; it's another to justify that conclusion through a logical thought sequence and that is what geometry is all about. Whatever problems you're having, I am sure I can get you on your way to a deeper understanding and appreciation of geometry.

Algebra 1,

ESL/ESOL

My major in undergraduate school was Latin American Studies, which required, among other things, coursework in French, Spanish, and Portuguese. Geometry,

Honest,reliable and dedicated

I have been working with Karyn weekly to help me prepare for returning to college after 15 years of no school and no college level mathematics. She has been a great consultant and very helpful in keeping me ahead of the material that I will be studying. I originally wanted help with my college placement test and achieved well above expectations and now w”plan to continue working with her to help me stay ahead in my college career. The more time we work together helps her understand my skill level and has made the sessions more beneficial over time. She has also been flexible with my changing schedules and can meet me at times other than our usual.
