Thank you for stopping by! My name is Theresa and I have been tutoring students of all ages since 2001. I started out in Upstate NY, teaching math review classes to middle school students through Americorps. More recently I have worked with GSU's international students to improve their English communication skills.
I have recently graduated from GSU with a B.A. in Applied linguistics, a minor in psychology and a certificate to teach English as a second/foreign language.
Tutoring is a passion of mine; the possibilities that come about when working with students one-on-one are limitless! My daughter has been struggling quite a bit with algebra. Theresa is very patient and never makes my daughter feel embarrassed if she doesn't understand or get an answer right. Sometimes just a different approach will turn on a "light bulb". I definitely recommend Theresa. A+
My daughter has enjoyed working with Theresa. She relates well to my 10 year old and has boosted her confidence resulting in a better score!
Theresa has a great attitude and disposition toward teaching. She is very clever and quickly understand the most effective way to help. I particularly needed to improve my English as a second language and she has been very didactic and effective. The most valuable part is, I can feel she has taken the task to help me improve, as something very important for her. My ability to communicate with others in English has improved. I really appreciate it! I definitely recommend Theresa as tutor.
Absolutely wonderful tutor! Very effective and wonderful attitude. Theresa praised my son and boosted his confidence-very important for a child's success. Must call her and have her tutor my 13 year old!!!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Younger kids are a lot of fun to work with! I completed a one-year contract with AmeriCorps in 2001. I was placed in two different elementary/middle schools where I focused on students who needed help with math and English. I've also worked as a substitute teacher with students in K-8th grade.
I've completed the courses required for a TEFL/TESL certificate and I've also gone to language-teaching workshops off-campus. I have been a language tutor at GSU since May of 2011 and I love it! I specialize in grammar, conversational skills, stress patterns and pronunciation.
I possess a degree in Linguistics, which makes me uniquely qualified to help with learning and understanding phonics. I am able to break down the phonetic sounds of English in a way that is accessible to students learning other languages or how to read. When working with international students, I often find that it is only a few sounds that hinder mutual intelligibility. This causes a need for a lot of repetition!
For students struggling with particular sounds, I know how to describe the place and manner that the sound is articulated. I have a degree in linguistics which involved learning not only how to describe sounds in English, but in other languages, as well.
Having a strong vocabulary is generally tied to making a habit of building a context for new words. I used mnemonics for words I learned 15 years ago and I still remember them! If you have a hard time remembering vocabulary words and you're tired of writing them over and over, please get in touch!
