I'm Unique! Really I am. Energetic and creative. The type of teacher who really does things differently to try to make you enjoy being there. Yes, I'll still hit you with a 75 or 100 question test and expect you to master it and I'll give you a 40 question vocabulary quiz, but I'll also have a formal quiz in class without anyone every knowing they were quizzed and have the entire class pass with 100%.
I've been a biology teacher for 13 years, 4 years of AP biology, and I've been a TA for 4 years and I was once given the "TA of the year award" at FIU. Whenever a student was stuck we'd find a way to get through. I dance the three possible linear hypotheses. I make up mnemonics like "I'M a DR" and then make that my whole lesson. I dance the "ATP Dance".
I love biology it is my thing and I GEEK science in general. I know every person can learn biology, science... and anything that they want to learn. Science is a discipline, a way of critically thinking, not a set of facts, and you are a great scientists if you want to be curious about the world around us. That is all it takes (well that, some careful or precise observations, record keeping, critical thinking...). I know that you are already brilliant and that we just need to find the right way to unlock your brilliance. THINK YOU CAN...
I have a BS in Biology, a minor in Chemistry, the credits towards a masters degree (but no degree) for microbial marine ecology and marine biology. When I left graduate school and became a teacher I did so because I wanted to help others learn. While teaching I completed a graduate level MAT program (certificate only) in education to become a certified teacher. While I learn best by lecture and I must doodle while the person is talking, I realized most of my student population is not like me. They learn through different means.
I am UNIQUE and I'm like so many others.
I'm a loving father of two wonderful daughters and caring husband. My wife needs to work extra hard because she has a third child to watch over. I am really a great big child at heart, I play at everything.
I'm ADD-type, super sensitive, super empathetic, and I cry at every movie and sad piece of news. I cry at all sorts of happy things too and it can be very odd to be a wresting coach crying because your wrestler just won first place and you are proud for all their hard work. (Why do we cry?)
I changed the way I teach in so many ways just to try to reach the students that fall through the cracks. I have three brothers, and each is smarter than I am in so many ways. One is smarter in the ways of the street, in the ways of people, and in knowing people and in making friends. He failed out of HS. Another had written 12 novels by ninth grade, novels that I am proud to say should be bound and read by many others, he has no diploma. And another, who picks up and learns any instrument, who qualifies for MENSA (Genius level IQ) also failed out of HS. There was a reason I went to graduate school telling others I was "never going to teach High School."
No school every found or accommodated for my needs, so I accommodate for all of my students, just in case some are not diagnosed (like I was not diagnosed). These aspects changed me. Teaching at an Arts school simply freed me to be who I am. I am an "artsy" guy. I paint, draw, do photography, write poetry... I want to write a musical, a novel... I want to be a literary agent for student works and others works who need to be heard (pro-bono of course!)... I acted, sang, danced in HS... I grew up in an "artsy" family, and I spent my life being OK with being creative and thinking outside the box.
I think I might be able to help you see your problem from another angle. I've been helping my students look at their problems from other angles and "get it" for a while.
I cannot be your long term solution. I am available on a Part-time, as-needed basis. I have flexible and short notice availability. I am hoping that I can be of service to you. Personally, I do not agree with the EOC in any way. I am writing to my representatives as well as the DOE in protest. I am including copies of my Final exams from years past for them to compare against the "EOC" and its hidden 60 questions that are 20% of my student's grade. For me, it is a watering down of what I would require and a broadening of the scope. I do not believe in "survey" courses. I believe in teaching for mastery.
I can help you with BIOLOGY!!! (Biology 1, AP Biology, Biology 101, Genetics, Evolution, Cell & Molecular)
I can help with Chemistry 1, Marine science, Oceanography, Integrated science, Physical Science, Earth Space Science, Environmental Science, Ecology and others.
I can help with Zoology, Microbiology,
Science, writing, and math (GEOMETRY, ALG 1, ALG2, TRIG (+anything below ALGEBRA).
It would be my pleasure to assist you and your family.
It would be my pleasure to be of service.
I will help you to reach your goals. I'm Unique! Really I am. Energetic and creative. The type of teacher who really does things differently to try to make you enjoy being there. Yes, I'll still hit you with a 75 or 100 question test and expect you to master it and I'll give you a 40 question vocabulary quiz, but I'll
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a biology major, I went to graduate school in biology, and I've taught Biology for over eleven years.
I've taught simple genetics, dihybrid crosses, and modern synthesis of genetics in honors biology and AP biology. I've also taught as a graduate teaching assistant.
I am comfortable working with students of all ability levels, using manipulatives, living models, and more traditional methods. Often my students needed the most help with fractions and percentages, and I have enjoyed helping them come to master this topic area.
I am happy to provide my academic records.
