About Pat

I have been a teacher for over 20 years working with elementary age students with learning and emotional difficulties. I have a MS in Special Education and BS in Early Childhood Education. For most of my career I have worked with 2nd and 3rd grade special education students, both in classroom and as a resource teacher. Currently I am a third grade basic education teacher. In the classroom, I am constantly differentiating for my students to ensure that feel success at the their instructional level.

I apply this philosophy of differentiation when tutoring students. First and for-most it is important to tap into the student's interests. When you can find out what interests the student has it will be easier to tap into their motivation to learn. When you can improve student motivation you can improve learning. When you improve learning the student gains confidence in themselves, when the student gains confidence in themselves they are on the road to become independent learners.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have nearly 20 years teaching children who have been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD. As a classroom teacher I understand that children with hyperactivity need to have information broken down and given in small pieces for them to grasp. I use high interest materials to keep their interest and attention.

Dyslexia

In my nearly 20 years as a special education teacher, I have worked with many students that have had learning disabilities. Students that write certain letters backward are often thought to have dyslexia. However, this is quite common in children before the age of 8. It is a concern however if it still exists after that. Along with writing words backwards some children will actually read backwards, such as right to left. It is important to teach the proper way to hold a book, read from left to right, and to use context clues to help them identify unfamiliar words.

Elementary (K-6th)

I hold a Florida State certificate in elementary and special education in K-6.

Elementary Math

I have taught math to elementary age children for nearly 20 years. I use multiple strategies including real world examples to make the subject relevant to everyday experiences. I use hands on materials, and interactive computer games to strengthen the student's understanding of the concepts.

Phonics

I have used phonics to teach reading for nearly 20 years. I use various materials that support grade specific curriculum. I have been trained in the Stevenson Language Program, which uses visual clues to recall vowel pairs. I have found this program particularly beneficial for those students that have not responded to traditional phonic instruction.

Reading

I have worked with students who struggled with reading for nearly 20 years. I have been trained in the Stevenson language program, reading mastery. I have been trained in guided reading by Fontas and Purnell. In addition, I have worked extensively with Steck Vaughn phonics.
