About David

I am a recent Master's graduate from The Ohio State University. I earned my Master's degree in Mathematics with a focus in education. I was a teaching assistant in their Mathematics department for calculus, college algebra, and their mathematics course for future teachers. I have over 10 years experience tutoring calculus, geometry, trigonometry, precalculus, algebra, statistics, discrete mathematics, college level mathematics, SAT math, ACT math, and GRE math, and actuarial science. I also have experience with Microsoft Excel, SQL, Java, VBA, and R. I also worked for the university developing their online courses.

I formerly worked as an actuary for 4 years, which involved much work with Microsoft Excel, VBA, and Microsoft Word. In my most recent position at Ohio State I performed tasks in SQL, Java, and R. I am also a Georgia Tech alumni that studied Electrical Engineering and Applied Mathematics. I was a teaching assistant in the math and electrical engineering departments at Georgia Tech for calculus, linear algebra, probability and statistics, and signal processing courses.

I will be starting a PhD in Statistics at the University of Florida in August 2015.

I'm very patient and can explain difficult concepts in multiple ways during our tutoring session. Please contact me if you are interested in setting up a lesson.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I'm currently a tutor for ACT math. I've assisted students with this material for the past few years. I've written practice questions for an ACT math study manual. I've also taught a summer SAT math prep course.

Actuarial Science

I previously worked as an actuary in San Francisco. I've passed the following actuarial exams:

Exam P - Probability
Exam FM - Financial Mathematics
Exam MFE - Financial Economics
Exam MLC - Life Contingencies
Exam C - Evaluation of Actuarial Models

Algebra 1

I have much experience tutoring algebra. I've taught both Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 to high school students. I was also a teaching assistant at Ohio State for a College Algebra course. As a master's student at Ohio State I took a linear algebra course, which adds to my background in algebra.

Algebra 2

I have much experience tutoring algebra. I've taught both Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 to high school students. I was also a teaching assistant at Ohio State for a College Algebra course. As a master's student at Ohio State I took a linear algebra course, which adds to my background in algebra.

Calculus

I'm was previously a teaching assistant for calculus 1 at Ohio State during my time as a graduate student from 2012-2013. I was a teaching assistant for calculus 2 at Georgia Tech for two semesters. I've tutored calculus for about 10 years.

Discrete Math

I've had a formal course in the mathematics department at Georgia Tech in combinatorics. As a teaching assistant in the math department, I taught a course in finite math, which utilized many techniques of discrete math. I also write tests for high school math competitions, which have ranged topics in discrete mathematics such as number theory.

Geometry

I've tutored geometry to middle school and high school students. As a master's student I took rigorous graduate level mathematics courses that required me to write proofs, which are a major component of geometry. I've also taken a differential geometry course at Ohio State, which adds to my background in geometry.

Linear Algebra

I have taken graduate level linear algebra courses and was a teaching assistant for an undergraduate linear algebra course. I am qualified to teach the following:
1) systems of linear equations
2) matrix algebra (determinants, multiplication)
3) Gaussian elimination
4) eigenvalues and eigenvectors
5) Gram-Schmidt process
6) LU decomposition

MATLAB

I used MATLAB extensively in my graduate studies at Georgia Tech. I was a teaching assistant for a signal processing course that required students to program in MATLAB. I assisted students in developing their MATLAB code in this course.

Microsoft Excel

I've used Microsoft Excel's advanced tools for the past 7 years. I'm experienced creating pivot tables, data tables, lookup formulas (vlookups, hlookups), and mathematical and statistical formulas (countif, sumif, sumproduct, etc.). I'm able to make sense of large data sets through Excel's advanced functionalities.

Statistics

I have taken formal graduate courses in probability and statistics through the mathematics department at Georgia Tech and Ohio State. I was a teaching assistant for a statistics class at Georgia Tech for one semester. I've tutored statistics for about 5 years.
