Thanks to Donna for working with us. She was always prompt and prepared with activities to work on with our 10 year old son to prepare for the English section of ISEE exam. She has a great special focus on the essay portion.
I would highly recommend Donna.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Presently, as a Senior Adjunct Professor in Westchester County teaching at two colleges for the past 11 years, I bring to my tutoring activities several years experience in pubic speaking instruction.
In this role, I introduce, train and develop the student's need to speak publicly. The student's first introduction to public speaking is in the classroom in front of his fellow students; however, as the student moves to the professional environment, this skill becomes more important as they begin to speak to their staff and managers.
As professionals advance in their careers and need to present to higher levels of senior executives, the importance of communicating orally in a precise, competent and professional manner becomes a major skill that can make or break a career.
Many articles today discuss the loss of oral communications skills due to the the texting phenomena.
Still, the classroom and professional environment will always demand public speaking as a major skill set.
SAT writing is probably the most challenging for most students. Usually, students are unsure of what they are going to write and that is where I come in.
I give the student the tools they need to be prepared to write on any topic thus increasing their confidence and ability to anticipate this part of the exam.
I tutor students on all levels of writing and I enjoy watching the student's creativity come alive once they have conquered their anxiety.
My belief is that writing is fun. Once the student views writing as a form of communication skills which they already possess, the anxiety accompanying any writing task disappears. This is accomplished by introducing writing for interesting and creative topics which the student feels comfortable. I then move from creative and free lance writing to assigned and timed writing topics, the type they will come across on the exam. The key is to build the confidence and the comfort level that will develop the student's creativity as they approach any writing assignment.
