About Michael

Throughout my academic history I have been known by my teachers and professors as one who performs well in my studies. Whether it's participating in the Connecticut Invention Convention in elementary school, or performing and presenting research in meteorology at Florida Institute of Technology, my teachers have said that I am an above-average student. Having enjoyed the math and sciences in high school, I decided to pursue a degree in meteorology.

I graduated from Florida Institute of Technology with a B.S. in meteorology in May 2016. This required many courses in math and science, including calculus, differential equations, and physics, but I also took an elective course in introductory teaching (science) to elementary students. I especially enjoy working through algebra and geometry problems because of the logical reasoning and application that are required to work through some of those kinds of problems.

I did private tutoring in Algebra at my house during high school for a few weeks, and again in college for a few weeks (also Algebra). After college, I became a tutor for the AVID program at several schools in Brevard County, Florida. This involves facilitating in-class, student-led, small-group discussions as they work through various problems relating to math, science, history, or English. Working as a tutor for AVID has the benefit of keeping me up to date on topics the students are working through at the time. What I like about tutoring is knowing that my student leaves with a better knowledge and confidence in the subject. I emphasize to the student the importance of having a strategy for dealing with new kinds of problems, especially as related to math.

My high school English teacher was an excellent teacher, renowned by the school for going quite in depth with grammar, composition, and literature. Graduates from that high school consistently had better ACT and SAT scores than the other high schools in the area. When tutoring students in English, I use the same Handbook of Grammar & Composition that my teacher used.

I am CompTIA A+ certified as of May 2017, but I have been working with Microsoft Windows since the days of Windows 98, tinkering with the hardware and exploring the settings and configuration of the operating system. I have also helped computer technicians at elementary schools with configuration and installation of software and hardware, and since I have built my own computer from the basic components, I have had to work with all the hardware. Other experience includes working with virtual operating systems, Windows installations, system settings, troubleshooting, restoring laptop computers, and other things involving Windows.

I have been familiar with the Bible since my youngest days. I went through the whole Awana program from K-12, which involved scripture memorization, national/regional Bible quizzing competitions, and studies of basic biblical doctrine. During college, I joined the Intervarsity Christian Fellowship and attended Bible studies and conferences, eventually leading Bible studies and evangelistic outreaches. Today, I continue reading and studying the Bible, occasionally preaching at my church, regularly listening to various sermons, and reading many books on Christian living, doctrine, and philosophy.

Contact me for more information on the courses that I have taken, questions and scheduling, or for more information on any of the above.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
