About Diane

For over 10 years, I have been working with students in teaching and tutoring situations. As a college student, I worked with elementary students in math, reading, and writing for 3 years. During my fourth year, I worked in a local high school as an AVID tutor and worked with high school students in Algebra and Geometry. Upon graduation, I used my degree in Biology and Secondary Education to teach biology to high school students. I also have worked with a private tutoring service that allowed me to work with more elementary and middle grades students in math, reading, and writing. I currently work with college students full-time, tutoring them in various math courses. I have lots of experience with the student of any age who says, "I just don't get it. I can't do math." Over the years, I have had many success stories from students who never thought they could do it. I love working with students and seeing the growth and successes of each individual student.

My tutoring style is different from that of many other tutors. I like to ask a lot of questions, such as, "What's next," or "What do you think this means?" Questions like these draw information out of the student and helps me to know where the student is struggling and/or needs a knowledge "boost". Students often realize they know more than they think. This style also prevents the student from being "tutor-dependent" by encouraging him or her to think independently and incorporate prior knowledge into the current situation. I also incorporate resources the student already has, such as a textbook. I have found that by turning to school-provided books, the student gets used to utilizing them independently and can often learn to solve problems on his/her own...an amazing skill to have!

Tutoring sessions are best done once or twice a week...an hour or so at a time. I am available on weeknights or on weekends. and am willing to come to your home or meet in a neutral location.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have tutored students for several years in algebra, both privately and at the local state college. I work in the Learning Lab as a math tutor and tutor many students in this very topic everyday. Oftentimes, the college students are in remedial courses because they did not perform well in high school math. I also have experience tutoring students privately in high school math.

Algebra 2

I have worked with many algebra 2 students as well as college-level math students. My experiences have given me an excellent knowledge of the subject. My education degree has also allowed me to work with students of various backgrounds and knowledge levels.

Biology

I studied biology at UNC-Wilmington and received a bachelor's degree in this subject area. I have previously taught biology in a public high school, enabling me to be familiar with concepts and having the ability to teach/tutor a student in this content area.

Geometry

My experiences with high school math students have included many geometry students. Geometry students often struggle with not understanding the relationships between shapes and the rules that govern the relationships. These students also sometimes struggle with the algebra required to solve some problems in this subject area. I work with geometry students to learn the many different theorems they need to be successful in this course.

Prealgebra

Prealgebra students often struggle with everyday math concepts such as fractions, decimals, and math vocabulary. My experiences working with remedial college level students have allowed me to fine-tune my skills at tutoring in this subject area. Many times students just need to learn to stop second-guessing themselves and gain more confidence!
