About Emily

Hello! My name is Emily. I work as a teacher at the local zoo. I am a college graduate with a degree in Zoology. I have loved animals my entire life, and I sincerely enjoy teaching children to protect and appreciate the natural world. I love teaching people young, old, and every age in between.

Are you a first-grader struggling with reading, or a high school student having issues understanding the stages of mitosis? Are you a college student who needs help building a phylogenetic tree, or a fresh set of eyes to proofread your research paper? How about a fourth-grader who is confused about the difference between an adjective and a verb, or a sixth-grader who needs a little help remembering the order of operations? I'm here to help!

I may not have formal experience as a tutor, but in my current position I am constantly teaching people about animals in an informal setting. In college I was always helping fellow students and receiving positive feedback. I am a proficient writer, and I have an extensive amount of experience as an editor and proofreader. I am very patient, and I will do my best to help you understand and learn the material at hand.

Zoology is my passion, and biology is its backbone. Learning and teaching about the natural world comes to me easily, and I avidly believe that teaching is the best way to learn. Explaining biological concepts has always been my favorite method of studying. My former classmates always told me that I explained things thoroughly and with clarity. I have kept all of my biology textbooks, and they come in handy as external references.

I am proficient in the following college-level disciplines of biology: General Biology (Basic/Fundamental), Vertebrate Zoology, Conservation Biology, Biogeography, Marine Biology, Ecology, Conservation Biology, Animal Physiology, Ornithology, and Cell Biology.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biology

I am proficient in and own supplemental materials pertaining to the following college-level subjects: Biological Fundamentals; Cell Biology; Evolution; Ecology; Vertebrate Zoology; Biogeography; Marine Biology; Ornithology; Conservation Biology; Biological Data Analysis; and Neotropical Biology.

ESL/ESOL

I am a fluent English speaker who has been at a college reading and writing level since middle school. Proper grammar and punctuation are very intuitive to me, and I am capable of patiently and politely working with non-native English speakers in order to hone their skills and strengthen their grasp of the language.

Grammar

I have written numerous scientific papers. I took a writing intensive course where I did nothing but proofread and correct papers for an entire semester of college. I have always excelled at language arts and grammar.

Zoology

I studied zoology for four years, and I possess a BS in Zoology. I earned straight A's in all of my upper division courses. I also spent a semester doing zoological field work in Costa Rica, and wrote extensive papers about my studies upon returning to the United States. I currently work at a zoo, teaching guests about conservation biology, as well as then various animals in the zoo.
