About Jacob

Mathematics was not always my strong suit and the process brought difficult challenges to reach any success. Now that I have faced many of those challenges and enjoy math, what stands out as the most helpful was the professors or classmates who taught clearly, step-by-step, and had fun with the topics. Because I didn’t start out just getting math, I am completely aware of the head pounding frustration that it can create, but I have also learned a thing or two about how to get past those moments.

My experience as a tutor started with offering to friends and family the same help I needed in previous math classes. These included multiple subjects for students from elementary through college and I learned to be quick on my feet and prepared for any topic. In a more professional environment, I started work with Valencia College as a student leader. Here I guided study groups and individuals in and out of the classroom mostly concentrating on college-level algebra. With over two years’ experience, I have refined the skills to explain topics clearly, encourage study habits that work, and prepare students to take even the most difficult test. The most important part of the tutoring process as that we are going to have fun learning the ins and outs of mathematics.

I enjoy being a tutor, not just because of my professional experience, but because of the personal relationships that learning creates. My understanding is that by offering my tutoring services, I am making a commitment to bring the same passion you have to reach your goals and achieve success. If you think we make a good fit, whether you’re an elementary student or college graduate, I hope to hear from you soon.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

My professional experience covers over two years of helping college level students in and out of class. I have also helped personal friends and family in high school level Algebra 1. My favorite topics in this subject are polynomials, quadratic functions, and exponents.

Algebra 2

I have helped personal friends and family in high school level Algebra 2. My professional experience includes over two years with college level students. My favorite topics in this subject are logarithmic functions, systems of equations and inequalities, and radical functions.

Geometry

Many of the subjects I help with have large sections dedicated to Geometry. Many students struggle in this section and I have experience covering most of its topics. My favorite parts of this course are right triangles, transformations, surface area and volume.

Prealgebra

Many college students need proper refreshers or preparation in prealgebra, for whom I have helped for over two years in and out of the classroom. I have also helped personal friends and family in middle school level prealgebra. My favorite topics in this subject are slope-intercept form, transformations, and Pythagorean Theorem.

Precalculus

Understanding that precalculus connects what we learned in algebra to what comes next in calculus helped me do well while taking the class and helping other students later. My favorite topics are polar coordinates and limits.

Trigonometry

Trigonometry is my favorite subject in high school and college level mathematics. I received high marks when taking the class and enjoyed the times helping fellow students with the many topics. The topics I enjoy the most are trigonometric functions and vectors.
