I earned my way through college tutoring English. The university was so impressed with my skills I was awarded a full scholarship for my master's degree. I also worked as a technical editor at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, so my grasp of science and scientific publication standards is excellent. After five years of teaching university English, I left academia to become a corporate communications manager, writing for publications, editing manuscripts, and doing more than a little ghost writing. I left a corporate staff manager position to become a communications consultant, but decided to freelance as a writer after the last three companies I worked for were sold when I'd been with them only a year or two.
I hold a law degree from John Marshall College of Law at Cleveland State University, but do not practice law in Florida. I have missed teaching and tutoring seems an ideal way to go back to something I love doing. I love the look of comprehension in a student's eyes when he or she finally "gets it." When I taught before, the university sent me its problem students--those who had flunked English before. I never had a failure among them. I can't promise to make you into a great novelist, but I can promise to equip you with the skills you will need to shine in the working world, whatever your career path.
I'm very good at helping students with academic deficiencies master the grammar and writing skills they need to succeed. I also had an outstanding teaching record in helping high achievers realize their goals in creative writing.
My bachelor's degree is in history. For the past three decades, I've studied American history to better understand my own ancestors' daily lives---almost every branch of my family tree had ancestors here before America became a nation. In order to understand their lives, I've studied politics, economics, daily lives and naturally the development of America's legal system, which defines us as a republic.
If you have questions about any particular skill set or experience I have, please contact me. Tell me your problem areas and what issues you have. Not all of us are fortunate enough to get outstanding teachers in English or history from elementary through high school. My specialty in teaching college English was helping students learn the skills they may have missed in their earlier education. I can also teach you how to write effectively, whether it's a resume for that dream job you want or the cover letter that will grab the attention of a potential employer or help you write a carefully constructed business report to explain where things went wrong with your last project without casting any blame.
As for history, it's my passion and you'll find me particularly knowledgeable about the Revolutionary War and the Civil War as well as all our 20th and 21st century conflicts. I earned my way through college tutoring English. The university was so impressed with my skills I was awarded a full scholarship for my master's degree. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
