About Carol

I love to help people. That's why I love tutoring. I get to do what I love - I get to help people learn and watch them grow, bursting with happiness, joy, and a new-found confidence in their eyes as they realize they've just picked up on the concept they couldn't get.

I am a no nonsense kind of tutor that likes to make homework fun. I am a detail-oriented, hard working and meticulous individual, and I expect the same of my students. I only ask of my students what I know they can give me - nothing more, nothing less. I will keep you on the edge and challenged but never overwhelmed.

I have been tutoring for over 20 years. I tutor all ages, from pre-K to adult. I specialize in Math (elementary, middle school, Algebra, pre-Calculus, Calculus), English, Reading, Grammar, Spelling, Vocabulary, Phonics, and Computers (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Having graduated high school as a summa cum laude and Salutatorian, I know how important your education and getting good grades is. After high school I went on to college and obtained my A.A. degree in General Education and later returned to college to get my A.S. degree in Computer Programming and Analysis. I could not have done this without having the good grades that I received with the help of my tutors.

I like to keep the parents updated and involved as much as possible. I prefer one-on-one instruction but am willing to do small groups.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve success in your studies!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I have been tutoring students with ADD/ADHD for the past 17 years. I have been quite successful in gaining and maintaining a student's attention throughout a tutoring session. I use a variety of tutoring methods to get the material across to the student, always diversifying to keep it interesting. I tailor my tutoring methods to meet the student's needs and style.

Common Core

I have been tutoring the basics of Common Core for over 20 years, from elementary school to high school. There are 3 different grading categories for assignments in the Common Core. Common Core breaks down the subject matter into various smaller segments that make it easier for students to learn and understand the material. I have an Associate's Degree in General Education which helps me better understand what concepts are taught and at which grade level they are taught.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have tutored elementary students in a variety of subjects for the last 20 years. Although I specialize in math and reading, I also tutor in language arts, science, and social studies. I tailor my tutoring methods to match the student's learning style.

I also specialize in elementary students with ADD/ADHD. I currently have 17 years of experience dealing with children with ADD/ADHD.

English

I have been tutoring English for over 25 years. I am a kind, caring, and patient tutor who likes to connect with my students. Because not everyone learns the same way or at the same pace, I use a variety of tutoring methods. I take time to find out how my students learn best, and I individualize my tutoring style to best fit my students' needs. My ultimate goal in tutoring is to empower my students with knowledge and the courage, curiosity, and desire to continue learning all they can.

Handwriting

I have been tutoring the art of handwriting for over 20 years. I have taught many how to properly hold a writing utensil as well as proper paper placement. I have taught both manuscript and cursive writing. I have fat and regular pencils for my handwriting students. I start by determining what size pencil should be used based upon the user's fine motor skills. I then teach the basics of how to hold a pencil and how to trace the alphabet. Practice makes perfect so I make sure I give my students homework to practice their tracing until they are steady enough to write without the tracings. We slowly write age-appropriate words until the writer feels comfortable enough with his/her work to be able to learn cursive. I provide tracings of both writing styles as well as writing utensils and practice paper. I work on the same area until the concept is grasped and the student understands the proper procedure(s) for the particular writing style chosen.

Homeschool

I have been tutoring students in the private, public, and home environments for over 25 years. I tutor using the academic standards and common core principles established by the Board of Education. Because not everyone learns the same way or at the same pace, I use a variety of tutoring methods to individualize my tutoring style to best fit my students' needs. My ultimate goal in tutoring is to empower my students with knowledge and the courage, curiosity, and desire to continue learning all they can.

Linear Algebra

I have been tutoring linear algebra for over 10 years. Linear algebra is the branch of mathematics concerning vector spaces and the linear mappings between such spaces. It includes the study of lines, planes, subspaces, and linear sets of equations as well as their transformation properties and the properties common to all vector spaces. Linear algebra is used in platforms such as mathematics, engineering, physics, natural and social sciences, and computer science and animation. Throughout my years tutoring linear algebra, I have found that this is one of the more difficult subjects for students to grasp due to the visualization and geometric interpretation of theoretical ideas. It requires students to go beyond the technical studies of algebra and into the abstractness of algebra. I have developed numerous methods to help students connect with the dimensions of linear algebra and its applications.

Microsoft Windows

I have been using and tutoring students in the use of Microsoft Windows for over 30 years. I have an A.S. degree in Computer Programming and Analysis that is Microsoft based. I have worked, and installed, with various editions of Microsoft Windows from Vista and XP to version 3.x, including versions for network servers. I have built several desktop computers that I have a version of Microsoft Windows as its operating system.

Phonics

I have been using phonics to teach students to read for over 20 years. I teach beginning sounds and blends to ending sounds to short words. These transition from flash cards to worksheets to coordinate handwriting with the reading skills. At this time I also introduce little books like "Little Brown Bear" so the children have a feeling of success when they finish reading their book.

For my older children I teach them about syllables and separating words appropriately. I teach them how to break the words down into smaller, more readable segments.

Whether they are younger or older students, the key is to make sure they get a sense of accomplishment at the end of the day - that great big smile at the end of the session that says, "Hey, this really is fun!"

Reading

I have tutored students in Reading for more than 20 years. I tailor my tutoring methods to match the student's learning style. I also use a variety of teaching aids to help keep my students interested in learning.

Study Skills

Over the course of my 20 years of tutoring there is one thing that hasn't changed. Students still try to memorize everything instead of learning good study habits to succeed. Sure, some things like the multiplication table, require memorization but most things build upon one another and require more than memorization. It requires good note taking skills and cognitive thinking skills. It requires reading all the answers before picking just one. It requires actually reading the material (usually skimming the material to get the main idea and then rereading it to get the details) and not just flipping through the pages. It requires a desk and a chair and not a bed and a pillow. Most importantly, however, it requires a quiet place to study.
