While I spent four years in a formal classroom teaching elementary students, I have over a decade of experience working with children, teenagers, and adults to help them improve their knowledge base and academic skill set. I taught fourth, fifth and sixth grade students in all subjects, though the bulk of my time was spent teaching mathematics and science. I come from a family of educators; my mother was a fourth grade teacher for over 30 years and my father is a retired college professor. Education was greatly valued in my home, and I know the life-changing effect a quality education can have. I am committed to making sure as many children have one as possible.

In my experience, the biggest challenge in education is getting to the "click" - that moment when it all comes together for a student and makes sense. Often times, teachers don't have time to get to that click for every single student. However, I believe it is essential to any child being a successful learner. I am committed to getting to that click, and I can be very creative about making that happen.

When I was a student, math didn't make a lot of sense to me. It came very easily to my brother, and I could never get teachers to explain it to me in a way that made me understand it. That's the very reason I taught math in elementary school - I could relate to the struggles my students were having and I could explain it in ways that students could understand the numbers and the function. I don't want students to just know what steps they need to follow; I make sure they understand why they are following those steps and what they are actually doing.

While I struggled in math as a student, English was my favorite subject. To this day, I am an avid reader, I write books and plays, and I love to use words to make a story come to life. Understanding the rules of grammar allow words to do just that, and worlds can be changed through words. However, I find that a lot of students struggle with comprehension because they are actually struggling with decoding. As a former literacy instructor, I have a strong background in phonics and decoding skills that can assist children in significantly improving their English and language arts skills.

Spelling is understanding the patterns that occur in English along with rote memorization. I work with students to help them understand those patterns - the same patterns that are a part of decoding, and I have lots of fun games and techniques to assist with the memorization. Learning should be fun, which encourages students to participate in it. I try to make a lot of it fun.

I would love to have an opportunity to discuss how I might assist your child in becoming a stronger academic learner and achiever. Please reach out to me so that we can talk about your needs and how I can help you address them.
