About Shelby

I am newer to tutoring, but have worked with children for over 8 years. My love for school and education came from having amazing teachers who truly cared about the subjects they taught and the success of their students. Their passion was inspiring because it allowed you to relate and understand what they were teaching. My mother was also a teacher for over 35 years so I was able to learn so much from her. When I am teaching, coaching or mentoring someone, the best moment is when I see the light bulb turn on and the person says with a smile on their face, "I get it!" Their confidence level is boosted and I believe that is one of the most important parts of learning. It promotes the student to try, even if they aren't complete sure.

The experience I have gained from the last 8 years in retail management, leading 45+ people, has taught me that one size does not fit all. I have found on many occasions that it isn't always the subject matter that is difficult, but the way it is presented. The message being sent isn't always the message being received, so finding the gap to connect everything is important for success. Learning about the individual helps you understand the best way to approach a learning opportunity and praise, even with small achievements, makes a positive impact.

I've always had a love for reading. Reading helped me understand more than what I learned in school about the parts of speech, types of sentences, etc. Mad Libs were also very helpful and fun! My time as a pre-K teacher I believe has given me a better sense of how to work with phonics. Finding ways to relate sounds with words is only part of the task, but relating on personal levels to understand how it all connects is most helpful. Patience and repetition go a long way. Because I studied Photojournalism for several years, it gave me a great understanding and appreciation for accuracy. It greatly improved my writing abilities. Incorrect spelling can have a huge impact on facts and context. Also, no one really likes it when their name is spelled wrong either.

As a History major and a dork of all historical things, American History has been the most interesting because it is the foundation of the country we know today. The most exciting part of American History for me has been learning all the juicy details of what really happened, not just the things we learn in our textbooks.

I believe a tutor-student relationship has to be a two way street where we both give our best to meet in the middle. I have to put in effort to provide lessons that will inspire and motivate the student using flashcards, dancing, charts, pictures or games. I believe the student will benefit greatly by asking questions for clarity and understanding and putting in the effort to excel. I look forward to having fun while achieving great things!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
