Wake Forest University (Studio Art)
I am a graduate of Wake Forest University with a degree in Studio Art and Psychology. Currently, I work as a freelance motion picture camera assistant, photographer, and tutor. I excel in and enjoy tutoring most in the areas of Photography, Cinematography, Guitar, English (reading, writing, grammar), Literature, History, Art, Psychology, and Biology. I have always had fun while learning, and I constantly strive to create a fun and enjoyable environment when tutoring. It's a lot easier to learn a new concept or master a new skill when you're having fun.
Everyone learns new things in a slightly different way. Some of us are more visual, some are more aural, and some have a greater preference for tactile learning. Two very important things to me when I tutor are (1) identifying if the student is more visual, aural or tactile and (2) helping the student to realize how best to approach learning given their unique talents and preferences. It's easy to help someone memorize information for an upcoming test or help someone proofread an essay, but I think it's much more valuable to help the student understand how he/she learns best so that they can apply their strengths to all facets of learning and not just school work.
I'm extremely comfortable teaching middle school and high school students. I don't have as much experience with elementary students and college students, although I would welcome the opportunity to tutor at these levels. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
At Wake Forest University, I concentrated in film and photography. I have completed numerous university courses ranging from general photography to film installation. I excel in cinematography and photography and work professionally as a freelance photographer and motion picture camera assistant. Shooting film is one of the most technical, energetic things a young photographer/cinematographer can do to develop their skills in the medium.
I have been playing guitar for eight years now. Although I have no formal music education, guitar has always been something that has come easy to me. Depending on the skill level of the student, I teach on both acoustic and electric guitars, and for some more advanced students, I teach the use of effects and audio recording/editing. Some of my favorite bands include The Velvet Underground, Led Zeppelin, Nirvana, The Strokes, and Elvis Costello; although I am comfortable teaching any style. Additionally, I have five years of experience gigging and playing live.
Photography has always been a great passion of mine. It was not until college that I discovered that people actually liked my photographs and I could make a living doing it! Now, I work as a freelance photographer and motion picture camera assistant, when I'm not tutoring that is. I majored in Studio Art (along with Psychology) at Wake Forest University and I concentrated in film and photography. I am proficient in all aspects of digital photography. I also shoot film and really enjoy the process. It's not quite as practical as digital photography but it sure is fun!
