About Heidi

My love of teaching and tutoring began more than twenty years ago when I started community college. My intent was to be an elementary school teacher, instead I took an eight year detour to work with disabled students in a post-secondary environment. I never got over the desire to teach, so I headed back to school to obtain my Master's degree in English and begin a new my career as a high school English teacher. Being a teacher has given me a better understanding of how students learn and which concepts give students the most difficulty.

In the classroom, I prefer using Kagan strategies because they employ group and partner work . Research shows that students absorb and retain more information when they work together. However, when I tutor a student before or after school, I prefer to target the areas of weakness or uncertainty.

Also, I assign homework from the tutoring sessions that will assist the student in the areas we have worked on. My goal with any student is to have them understand a concept, definition, or theme well enough to be able to teach it to a friend. If you can teach it, you have mastery.

I have administered the ACT, SAT, CLAST, and PSAT to large groups or a single student. My understanding of standardized tests is extensive. I look forward to working with you to achieve your desired goals.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Reading

English Qualifications

I am Reading endorsed from the state and taught READ 180 and remedial English and Reading to students from 6-12th grade. I tutor students from elementary school to high school.

ADHD

My understanding of ADHD stems from the eight years working with disabled students at the post secondary level. I have attended workshops and conferences to deepen my knowledge of this particular disability. Students with ADHD need to take breaks from the learning environment, need clear directions and often need prompting. Also, some students work better small chunks of information rather than one long lesson.
Also, I have tutored, revised papers and assisted I clarifying notes and planners to keep students clear on their schedules and due dates. This tremendously assists with ADHD
