About Josh

Hi, I'm Josh! I graduated from the University of Central Florida in 2012 with a dual degree in Communications and Public Affairs and have always been a savvy English specialist. The dictionary and thesaurus are two of my favorite books! Since my graduation, I've founded a non profit organization called Advocates for World Health dedicated to providing third world countries with surplus American medical supplies. As a prior college tutor, I've always had a knack for teaching and providing insight to students. I've decided to get back in to the tutoring game in order to help any and all students who are looking to broaden their knowledge!

During my time at the University of Central Florida, I was actively involved in tutoring my peers in both English and Legal studies. I began tutoring in the second semester of my Sophomore year (2010) and have strengthened the ability to find common ground with my students' learning behaviors. This is my greatest strength as a teacher, being able to convey the subject in a relatable fashion, leading to a greater understanding and ultimately a better grasp of each subject. I believe education holds the key to so many opportunities in life. However, not every student is perfect for every course. The value of of a tutor lies in the ability to have their student not just memorize a subject, but to understand the subject. This is what I strive for in my tutoring endeavors, knowing my students can better grasp the concepts of their subject provides more satisfaction than any flash card memorization could allow.

On the side, I have played guitar for 15 years and have extensive knowledge of note theory and their practical applications on the fretboard. Although I consider music more of a personal hobby, I have much to offer for anyone looking to learn or improve upon the instrument. I am also very involved in local theatre groups and have successfully coached students in the art of public speaking.

In conclusion, I do take a relatively laid back approach to tutoring while striving to provide my best insight to each individual student. I like to think students are very comfortable around me, making the learning process easier and more productive for all parties. I would be more than willing to field a conversation prior to the initial session and can provide contact information upon request. I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have a double major in Communications and Public Affairs, both of which heavily involve a knowledge of the English language. I have experience teaching students in both the formative and analytical sides of English. Examples of these subjects include reading comprehension, legal studies, and English literature. I have also coached students on the test-taking approach to the subject, having personally scored in the 97th percentile on the ACT English and Reading sections.
