About Melissa

I have been teaching for 6 years, both online and in the classroom. I have taught all levels of English, Journalism, Creative Writing, Speech, and Career Development. I have also been the Environmental Club and Yearbook advisor for award-winning clubs. My background is in ESE, but I find that some of the same strategies work in the regular classroom.

I feel that the best way to help students is to listen to them and guide them through the material in the format they learn best in. When a student understands that the teacher is there to help them succeed and not fail, the student is more open to see their own strengths in learning.

I am a certified English teacher for grades 6-12, and have taught all levels of English. I am ESE certified K-12, and have specialized in working with students with social anxieties, ADD, ADHD, Autism, Aspergers, and differing mental disabilities.

I look forward to helping you succeed. Please contact me if you would like to schedule a lesson.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I taught students with ADD/ADHD for over 4 years. It was in an alternative setting through the county established to help these students succeed and graduate high school. I utilized techniques that were unique for each student in ways that helped them reach their highest potential. Strategies were diverse in complexity, yet were sometimes as simple as letting a student pace while reading. I am also ESE certified K-12.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I have taught students that span the spectrum of Autism for over 4 years. I have utilized strategies that allow students to view their Autism as a different way of learning, not a disability. Understanding the needs of each individual student, and how they learn best, enables me to better guide them to success. The school that I taught the highest population of Autistic students was an alternative setting through the county established to help these students succeed and graduate high school. I am also ESE certified K-12.

English

I am certified in English 6 - 12. I have taught all levels of English in grades 6 - 12, both regular and Honors credit.

Public Speaking

I have taught Speech I and Speech II for 2 years in the classroom. I also integrate public speaking strategies and incorporate public speaking assignments into my English classes.

Special Needs

I specialized in teaching students with ADD/ADHD, Autism, Aspergers, anxiety disorders, and mental disabilities that span the spectrum including, but not limited to, psychosis, schizophrenia, and OCD for over 4 years. It was an alternative setting through the county established to help these students succeed and graduate high school. I am also ESE certified K-12.
