About Darryl

I'm a Howard University grad and Mensa member who joined the Orlando Sentinel in 1990. In that time, I've written about small-town government, law enforcement, health and families, and military affairs. Since 2003, I've penned a Metro column that focuses on a variety of issues including education, politics and social commentary.

Since 2009, I've served on the Orlando Sentinel Editorial Board, writing institutional editorials on subject that include education, law and justice, religion and military affairs.

In 2008, I won second place in column writing from the Florida Society of Newspaper Editors. In 2010, I was awarded the National Association of Black Journalists Salute the Excellence Award for Commentary. In 2012, I won First Place in Sunshine State Awards for commentary.

For three years, I served as a tutor for A to Z In-home Tutoring service teaching reading and language arts to at-risk grade-school children through an in-home tutoring service, delighting in helping them catch up and discover the joy of the English language through reading and writing.

I also served as "Visiting Journalist" for an Orlando Preparatory school, advising and critiquing the school's student newspaper staff on writing techniques, form and structure.

I have had 25 years as a professional newspaper journalist and freelance magazine writer. I have advanced copy-editing skills.

I look forward to helping to sharpen your prose and hone your writing voice on everything from Florida Standards Assessments to college entrance essays to dissertations. I also tune-up your resume.

I'm available to help kick up your writing a notch evenings after 6:30pm and Saturdays mornings.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

For several years, I taught reading/language arts to grade-schooleers as a tutor for A to Z In-home Tutoring service. And I taught 5th grade Sunday school for a decade.

Grammar

Grammar and parallelism are fundamental components of good writing. Components that I have burnished during a better than 25-year award-winning career as a professional journalist with the Minneapolis Star-Tribune and The Orlando Sentinel.

Proofreading

As a professional journalist for more than 25 years with the Minneapolis Star Tribune and The Orlando Sentinel I'm charged with proofreading and copyediting articles written by me or guest columnists.

Reading

I also have served for several years as an in-home tutor for at-risk children tutoring in reading and language arts.

Spelling

Words are my life working as a professional journalist at the Minneapolis Star-Tribune and Orlando Sentinel for more than 25 years. And spelling correctly was in vogue long before spell check.

Vocabulary

As a professional writer and a Mensan, Roget's thesaurus is my second bible. I'm fluent in prefixes and suffixes, and steeped in the diversity and beauty of the English language.

Writing

I'm an award-winning newspaper columnist and I served as "Visiting Journalist" for several years at a Preparatory School, advising its newspaper staff on writing style, form and structure.
