My goal as a certified K6-12 English teacher and college instructor is to help students become confident in their success. This may come by helping students with SAT, ACT, writing coursework, review of college application essays, scholarship essays, better organization, and/or study skills.

Using my own experience with curriculum development, I designed 4 SAT workshops to use as a starting point for individual tutoring. Many students who follow my program have increased their scores by 100 points after 5-10 hours of practice. These workshops have been presented to large groups at a local high school and individually for my Wyzant students.

I have my MA in Writing and Rhetoric and BA in English Education, hold gifted and ESOL endorsements, am certified as an online instructor, and I currently teach First Year Composition and Writing Skills for Law Students at the university level. I also have a graduate certificate in Community College Teaching and taught 10th, 11th, and 12th grade English before teaching 9th grade students (PreAP/Gifted/Honors). In each level, I coached students on how to achieve their goals by developing clear action plans to move them forward. I use my experience and education to specialize in helping students with SAT and ACT prep, application management, writing skills (college essays, applications, and in-school essays), reading comprehension, resume writing, and study skills.

Tutoring should be adaptable to meet students where they are. I want to help students have the confidence to achieve their goals. Specifically, I break down the material into more digestible pieces to help students thrive, which allows students the ability to continue growing after our sessions are complete.

Included in the hourly rate is extensive prep time, access to resources that I have curated just for you, and a thorough breakdown of each session.

I look forward to starting this journey toward academic success with you!

My Bachelor of Science degree in English Education required the study of standards as well as how to reach the complexity of those standards with students. I have used a standards based methodology in my classroom for many years now so I am very familiar with the terminology and accessibility of the standards.
Study Skills

Study Skills

I am a very organized person myself and I help my students do the same. I have worked with the AVID program in two separate schools and have seen how they help students improve their study skills. I have taught students how to use Cornell notes, organize by subject and priority, as well as understand time constraints. Lastly, as a graduate student, I must apply my own study skills consistently; such as reading with purpose, annotating, prioritizing, organizing, and being efficient and effective in my work schedule.

I received my Bachelor's degree in English Education with a minor in Writing and Rhetoric. I also have an TESOL endorsement and Gifted Endorsement that pairs with my Florida Teaching certificate and received my Master's in English with a specification in Writing in Rhetoric. Using these degrees and certifications, I have taught English to 9th-12th grades and college freshmen since 2014. In addition, I also help with resume building, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and TOEFL tests. I am also a professor of writing skills at a law school and use this experience to show how students can adapt their writing and language to different audiences.

Along with my background in English Education and my M.A. in Writing and Rhetoric, I have taught English to 9th-12th grade in the last five years. In those years, I taught SAT Prep for the Writing and Reading sections to my students as a class and on an individual basis after school. Using my experience with curriculum development, I designed 4 SAT workshops to use as a starting point for individual tutoring. These workshops include all sections of the SAT (reading, writing, math, essay). In these large group sessions, I give an overview, tips, strategies, and interactive practice to students. Many students who follow my program have increased their scores by 100 points after 5-10 hours of practice. I have had many one-on-one tutoring sessions outside of school for the SAT as well as large group sessions for The Greatest Investment and local high schools. I have also designed an ACT workshop as well and helped various students with other test breakdowns (GRE, Architect Exams, FSA, etc).

As a high school teacher who has worked with students from grades 9-12, I have had many students come to me for help about their future goals. I have helped them refine essays and look at being well-rounded so as to be more noticeable by colleges. I also worked at the Writing Center at University of Central Florida where students who are coming into college for the first time, as well as applying for jobs and graduate schools, come for advice on what the college, or job, is looking for. In addition, I teach first year composition and see freshman colleges students right as they enter college and work with colleagues all across the university to hear about what the college is looking for. From these experiences, I have helped various students: find the right college to apply to, get their SAT/ACT/GRE scores where they need to be, and write hard hitting college application essays to put their best foot forward. I have found that with my previous work, as well as being accepted into 6 colleges and 3 graduate schools myself, I understand where colleges are coming from as they look for the right student for their school.

Tremendously Helpful and Extremely Knowledgeable Tutor

I contacted Julie for guidance for my son with writing a college essay. Julie was tremendously helpful! She is extremely knowledgeable and experienced. My son learned so much because of her. She was able to show him how to concisely put his thoughts on paper. Before Julie's help, his essay did not have the proper impact or flow . After her help, the essay reflected exactly what he wanted to say from his heart. Julie is a very personable and engaging tutor and I highly recommend her. Her knowlegde and expertise are invaluable! She loves what she does, and it shows!

Great first session!

My daughter has always struggled in school and was feeling overwhelmed and defeated with her high school classes. Julie was able to set up a manageable schedule for the first week to help get my daughter on track. We have set up several more sessions with Julie to help my daughter with accountability and learn how to develop study skills.

Dedicated and knowledgeable tutor

Working with Julie on my writing has been great! I have learned how to tackle my writing assignments in a much more methodical and efficient manner. Editing, in particular, is a part of the process that I struggle with; Julie has really helped me to understand how to break down editing into more manageable stages, and she provided me with solid tips on how to produce a polished piece. I particularly love that Julie was incredibly dedicated to my specific needs and that she was so accessible and flexible. I felt so comfortable in reaching out to her, and I really appreciated that she went out of her way to free up some much needed extra time for me when I had approaching deadlines. Overall, working with Julie has been a fantastic experience!

Very organized and is always well prepared

Julie is a very organized and is always well prepared for every lesson. Our lessons have a good a flow to them because everything is planned ahead of time. She has demonstrated a strong mastery of technology through the use of Google Docs where all of our lessons and assignments are stored. Her understanding of education and human psychology has allowed her to help me better structure and assimilate complex learning resources thus making me a better and more confident test taker. Our lessons include modules whereby she help me strengthen my active recall skills through quick 5 minute presentations. We go through exercises that help me determine whether a question is a recall, application or analysis type. I consider with her time fulfilling and good a learning experience.

Organized and Professional

I had a great experience with Julie studying for the verbal section of the SAT (both the writing and the reading parts of the test) I improved tremendously over the sessions, with my verbal score increasing from just 600 to 700 in a month. Julie was always punctual and came prepared for the sessions. She created plans for the lessons and organized homework prior to the session. I'm really thankful to Julie for her help to achieve my goal!

Very helpful and patient

She taught me a great amount of writing skills for college essays. She was also very encouraging when I would be stressed about writers block. I would recommend her to everyone I know as she is an amazing tutor!

The Best Tutor

Julie is a grade saver. At first, I thought her rate was expensive however after the experience I had it was more than worth it. We discussed my needs for the research report that I was doing and I sent it to her. In less than 24 hours she had the report back to me with a very thorough review and caught a lot of the mistakes that I was making. She also caught that I was doing the assignment incorrectly and gave me a lot more ideas to fix what was wrong. She was also very encouraging when I was frustrated and provided emotional support as I gutted my entire assign the and redid it. You would be crazy not to take her on as a tutor in letter help you will not regret it.
