About Christen

The enthusiasm I associate with learning languages stems from that of my teachers throughout my high school and college careers respectively. I have always been passionate about emulating that enthusiasm and aiding those who might think they are not up for the challenge. French is often considered one of the more difficult languages to pursue, whether it is needed to fulfill a credit, prerequisite, or any other type of requirement. To be honest, I have not met too many who have taken French willingly. Many of the students I had tutored during my college years asked me simply to help them get by with a passing grade. They expressed on numerous occasions their blatant disliking of learning another language--particularly of French. I would tell them, "Good, because before we're done here, you're going to love learning French." One-hundred percent, yes all, of the students I tutored then went on to declare French minors, or at least continue on successfully with the intermediate courses. It's okay to have difficulties and not really know how to approach them. It's perfectly normal to never have an enjoyable experience with language learning. It doesn't matter what age, as I've worked successfully with undergraduate and graduate college students and adults who somehow considered themselves too old for the process. Though I haven't worked closely with high school students, I am very interested in pursuing this age group as well. High school was when I discovered my love of French and the bumps associated with the language-learning road, those years are pivotal for us all. Inevitably, no matter what ails you, you just haven't yet found your niche. And that's where I come in...
I have studied languages since my junior high school years and by high school studied three simultaneously. Of course, there were times for me when the learning process proved my greatest academic challenge. I moved away from French to focus on my other languages. Halfway through my Theatre Arts degree in college a friend had expressed interest in pursuing his own proficiency in my lost love, prompting me to help him study. My relationship with French was thusly rekindled and I could not wait to start taking classes again. Perhaps the reason for my prior difficulties had been in part due to the approach. A new approach was in fact all I needed. I went on to finish both a Bachelors in Theatre Arts and another in French Studies.
During my enrollment at Northern Kentucky University, I was employed through the Learning Assistance Program. Much like WyzAnt, this program allowed for students to seek tutors to aid them in improving or mastering specific subjects. Though I tutored multiple subjects I was requested most for French and found those particular sessions the most effective. The overall success of my taking part in the program was the ease of the scheduling for the students requesting me and our meeting one on one. I have always gone out of my way to personalize the learning experience to cater to my students individually. I prefer to help others approach a new language the same way they learned their native tongue. Maybe you'll feel four or five years old, but the proof is in the efficiency. I avoid forcing the basics and let them become embedded naturally, the way we learned our first language when we're young. I make sure to provide a solid foundation in pronunciation. In French, I have found this to be the highest hill to overcome and why a lot students sometimes call it quits. With pronunciation, along with all other complicated aspects of the language, I strive to make them seem simple conceptually and fun and exciting in practice. For those who already have experience with the language and want to focus more on fluidity in conversation, I like to introduce concepts that deviate from standardized textbook French, such as different dialects. For instance, when I spent a semester in Quebec, I had to quickly adopt uses for words I didn't even know they could have! We see situations like this happen in every language through out the world. I also enjoy and have had great results incorporating films, TV shows, music and literature originally in French as well as originally in English then translated to French. As studying tools, these forms of media delve deep into cultural differences from our own and how better to make sense of saying something that seems wrong when literally translated.
Overall, I am proud of my decision to reconnect with the language and all I want is to share my methodology with others, encouraging all suffering from language-learning turmoil to never give up!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Christen is very knowledgeable and positive.

She taught me that 80% of French nouns are feminine, so when in doubt, guess feminine. We also, at my request, worked on pronunciation.
