About Matt

My name is Matt R., and I would like to tutor in the areas of Science (elementary, biology, psychology, research methods), Reading, and Writing. I am currently a certified Special Education Teacher, and work at a K-8 Charter school. I like teaching students of all ages, and would be open to tutoring high school students as well. I have a Master's Degree in Psychology from Illinois State University, where I studied Learning, behavior modification, and biopsychology.

During my time in college, I specialized in ADD and ADHD (ODD and Autism to a lesser degree), and really connect with those students. I had ADD when I was a child, and my brother had ADHD. Growing up with ADD gives me the ability to bond with, and be patient with students suffering from these setbacks.

My Teaching style is pretty laid back, and I like to go at the student's pace. I can be strict when need be, but generally prefer not to be. Most students I have tutored previously have not chosen to be in tutoring, so I find that being strict and trying to force them to do things is usually counter-productive. I get along with my students very well, and often get asked to transition into a classroom. I really do prefer smaller groups or one-on-one time, because I feel this is the best way the students learn.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I studied ADD and ADHD extensively in my psychology graduate program. I am highly knowledgeable in behavior management and the learning processes of children with ADD/ADHD. My master's thesis was about current learning theories in ADHD and the biological processes that support them. I currently teach special education in grades 6-8 and have experience with children who are affected by it.
