About Alan

My love and passion for music, as well as my genuine interest in people and their progress, are what drive me to teach the guitar and piano to students. Since 2009 I have been teaching these two instruments in a classroom setting at elementary schools for an after school program. I began tutoring students at their homes in 2012.

People have a great variety of goals as far as what they wish to achieve from music. In tutoring, I cater to every individual and their ideas of what becoming a great musician or entertainer is all about. The students learn the songs they wish to learn. I teach them what is happening within each song. We go over the theory and concepts so that they are understood and we polish difficult segments of the songs to encourage good musical ethic. The music and skills I choose for my students is always intended to be challenging though never overwhelming.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Guitar

I have been teaching students guitar since 2010. At the University of Central Florida I studied classical guitar with Professor Scharron for two terms while also having a private tutor for a year. I currently teach a guitar class through an after-school program on campus. I also currently teach 3 private guitar lessons, my longest term being 5 years with one of these students. I teach songs, scales, chords, intervals, various genres, maintenance of the instrument and efficient fingering techniques according to a student's level and what he or she is wanting to achieve.

Piano

I passed the Florida Teaching Certification Examination on May 22, 2013 for Music K-12. Since 2009 I have been teaching piano at elementary schools for classroom after school lessons. Since 2012 I have been educating piano students privately at their homes. I teach how to get the most out of practicing and performing, using music that is both challenging and entertaining, dependent on the skill-set of my student and his or her interests. I address difficult passages and explain key concepts that are relevant within the music being studied. The lessons are built to suit the needs of my students individually, for them to achieve musicality and fluency on the keyboard.
