About Dawn

I have eight years teaching experience in the areas of English Literature, Writing, History, Test Prep, Phonics, and basic reading, writing, and math. I have worked both in the public school system and the private commercial tutoring sector. All this experience has led me to be a tutor confident in my abilities and to be comfortable with all age groups and abilities of students. However, I do not pretend to know everything, and what I do not know, I will research, learn, and be upfront with the student about my level of specialty in the area.

I taught for 5 years in the public high schools of Baltimore City. After moving to Florida, I worked at a K-8 school for children with autism and at a commercial tutoring center. Through all these experiences, I have gained knowledge and expertise with children of all ages and abilities. I have worked individually with children with disabilities from ADD to the severest side of the autism spectrum. I feel particularly qualified to work with individuals struggling to learn despite their varying learning modalities as I have a daughter living with Aspergers. I have the patience and knowledge to really understand how each child individually learns the best. Through my work with all age groups, I have the ability to break down skills to the very basic level and scaffold learning for success. I understand how adult learning is different from high schoolers and I have the experience of working with 4 year olds in early childhood development. I definitely think my vast experiences in education can only be an asset to each student's learning experience with me. I bring all of me to the table and do not stop until my student has found success. Education is the most important life skill to me and there is nothing I would not give to make every child and adult in the United States a literate individual.

I understand that difficulty is relative and all students struggle and learn in different ways. I believe that every student can learn and achieve and my goal is to ensure all my student are successful. I will not give up until I have all my energy into ensuring that your child become a successful student and that his/her goals are achieved. Education is my bottom line and you will find that I tend to go above and beyond for each student because I truly care about the institution of education and the children as individuals.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I have taught many students diagnosed with ADD/ADHD and attended many special education meetings to speak on behalf of these students and their abilities. I have worked with young children through high school students that struggle with this learning ability and have been successful in finding ways for them to compensate for their focus issues and compromised attention span. I have a plethora of patience and the ability to teach to varied levels and learning styles. I do not give up, but will work for the success of all children, irregardless of their perceived "disabilities."

I have the privilege of having a daughter with Aspergers. Working with her and learning from her has been the joy of my life. In addition, I worked at a charter school for children on all parts of the autism spectrum. I feel equipped to work with students diagnosed with aspergers and would love to meet and work with your child!

I spent a year at a local charter school for children with autism. During my time there, I encountered students on all areas of the spectrum and learned the various ways to help them through their emotional, social, and practical living skills. I practiced many different strategies for calming students, focusing their interests, teaching them in a way that reaches them, and what stimuli have the possibility of sending some students into panics. Since this time, I have used these skills I learned through my time teaching at that school to tutor students on the autistic spectrum in areas from math, to social studies, to English. I have confident that I can work with other students and make a difference in their lives and their abilities to interact with others and live productive lives.

I have been involved in dance in some way since I was three years old. In college, I minored in Dance and Choreography. I would not consider myself an expert in ballet, but I am very confident in my abilities to teach and perform on a basic to intermediate level. I have taught small beginning children through high school level students and would love to become involved in helping beginning adults to improve their form and style. I do not have access to a studio currently, but have plenty of music to choose from and a passion for dance that is unrivaled.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been working with children ages 4-13 in various subjects for 4 years. I have focused on beginning reading skills, phonics, spelling, and study skills. I have a thorough understanding of basic math, social studies, science, and language arts. I have prepared students for state testing and done homework help with good results. I am extremely patient and have worked with students of various ability levels. I have children myself and work well with this age group.

Study Skills

I have tutored for several years in the area of effective test taking strategies. In addition, I have worked with students from age 4 years old through adult learners to improve their study skills. I am a certified English teacher adept in the areas of note-taking, finding main idea, reading strategies, and memorizing techniques. I have a lot of study strategies at my disposal as well as resources to use in teaching effective study skills.

Very lovely, caring tutor with a calm nature — Dawn tutored our son for 2 and a half months during our stay in Orlando. My son at times would not work but with Dawn's positive approach and lots of encouragement he did complete his work. Although we brought school work over, Dawn introduced sight words, phonic book work, reading books and computer games that all linked into his school work. To keep my son motivated Dawn also put into place "goa ...
