About Vicki

As a lifelong writer, I'm in love with the English language. It is my native language and I enjoy helping others improve skills throughout the writing process. I meet each student or professional at his or her level in all stages of the writing process: brainstorming ideas, outlining, drafting, revising drafts, editing for grammar and punctuation, reviewing MLA and APA in-text citations, formatting bibliographies, and finalizing research papers for graduate and undergraduate programs. I can provide valuable feedback for essays, personal statements, creative writing, and technical writing assignments. My education includes coursework above and beyond general education requirements. Writing coursework in Writing Consulting Theory and Practice, Creative Writing Theory & Practice, Fiction Workshop, Creative Non-Fiction Workshop, English Grammar/Editing Essentials, Writing Life with award winning author: Amy Bloom, and Technical Writing.

I graduated summa cum laude from Rollins College. Recent writing consultations include management professionals in commercial real estate services, website writing and publishing, and health service administration deliverables. My education also includes a two year degree with an emphasis on biomedical topics, therefore, I often help professional nurses and other medical professionals who are ambitious enough to pursue a graduate degree while also holding down a full-time job in a local Emergency Room. Knowing medical terminology and general biomedical topics allows me to provide valuable feedback for those medical research papers that are a part of every rigorous medical education.

I also teach ESL English grammar, proofreading skills, how to increase conversational vocabulary, and how to conduct online research for native and non-native students. Providing one-to-one English writing instruction is my specialty. Students who need a Conversation Partner also meet with me to practice skills since I am a native English speaker. Recent students from Russia, Korea, Puerto Rico, and India have all provided 100% positive feedback after our sessions. Mostly, I work from my home office now, using online resources to support students and professional clients with writing projects.

The teaching methods I use are highly advantageous, raising English scores and improving professor critiques immediately after consultations. My methods are specific and based in learning theory, proven successful in English tutoring centers across America. One can learn writing in a writing center, but one can not learn to teach writing unless educated to do so. I have that specific education which specialized in Writing Consulting Practice and Theory. I did not begin tutoring or consulting professionally until I learned Best Practices and studied Learning Theory. For this reason, my students do not need as many tutoring sessions with me as they do with most tutors, who do not transfer their knowledge to students from the very first session. I strive to transfer this knowledge I have and to provide many online resources so my students do NOT NEED ME as a crutch. I'm thrilled with each message I receive advising me of an "A" earned on a major writing project. I will meet with a client several times on a large project, but most students do not need to meet every week to improve writing skills, when they hire me. These are the reasons below.

Many of my students are improving skills as native writers and some as non-native and English is a Second Language (ESL). I work one-on-one with each student, customizing each session for the particular needs of the student. I guide each student through the writing process and encourage autonomy while modeling critical thinking skills to enrich the research process for complex research papers. My support as an academic coach provides the framework for undergraduate and graduate student success.

PROFESSIONAL CONSULTANT EDUCATION: While employed with the University of Central Florida (UCF), I completed rigorous English Writing Consulting Tutoring and Practice coursework and a course practicum in the Center for Writing Excellence which prepared me to teach native and non-native students. I gained practical experience in ESL English writing skills, learning how to effectively transfer knowledge to students while working with a diverse population at two UCF campuses: UCF Orlando's writing center and EFSC/UCF's Cocoa campus writing center.

For university level writing assignments, I help students decipher academic rubrics and assignment criteria and prioritize research and writing. I help students learn to put English projects in perspective, set goals, and complete research papers within deadlines.

Most importantly: I make it fun. Writing well in English is a skill. My techniques increase confidence immediately, provide a framework for academic improvement quickly, and minimize the number of hours needed. I pack more into one hour than most tutors teach in several sessions.

The following list includes a few specific examples of graduate level writing assignments I've provided consultations for in recent semesters:

GRADUATE PROGRAMS/online and in person:

* Nova University Speech-Language Pathology master's program (APA style research - critical reviews paper)
* University of Central Florida master's degree (epidemiology research paper)

* South University, Orlando, master's program: Nurse Practitioner (APA NP final paper)

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am certified for tutoring elementary math, science, reading, spelling and vocabulary. I enjoy teaching these subjects in creative ways, including engaging students in writing short stories using their own drawings. I find that young children learn more when they are having fun, not being pressured. Labeling exercises and short questions and answers enable me to keep a student engaged in learning each subject.

Elementary Math

I am certified to tutor Elementary (K-6th)math including: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Elementary Science

I am certified to tutor Elementary (K-6th)Science. This is one of my favorite subjects. I am enthusiastic and enjoy conveying my love of science to children.

I hold a BA from Rollins College and graduated summa cum laude. This is important because I minored in English Writing and have extensive experience writing essays, creative stories, technical reports, and helping others to improve their writing skills. As a native English speaking resident, I have been employed as a university writing center tutor with UCF. I've also privately tutored English and writing since 2012. The students I've worked with have all achieved high scores on English writing assignments. I work with native and non-native English speaking students.

My experience includes volunteer work as a conversation partner with adult and college students at the Multilingual, Multicultural Center at the UCF main campus in Orlando. I have also provided writing tutoring for college students from the continent of Asia, the Mediterranean region, Europe, South America, the West Indies, and several of the Caribbean Islands. Some of the countries students originated from include: Brazil, Columbia, Venezuela, Japan, China, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, Taiwan, Korea, Kazakhstan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, India, Germany, Dominican Republic, Haiti, and Jamaica. I thoroughly enjoy conversations and tutoring sessions with students of all nationalities. As a native English speaker and writer, I can assist in increasing vocabulary, learning basic English grammar and providing engaging discussions and lessons. My education includes a writing consulting theory and practice course with a lab in which I studied ESL/ESOL tutoring, also gaining valuable experience tutoring in the UCF Center for Writing Excellence. I love tutoring English and use collaborative learning methods for improving one's conversation and writing skills. Learning English can be fun!

Having studied English grammar and assisted others to improve writing skills in university writing centers, I am certified to tutor English grammar for children and adults. My experience teaching high school and college essay writing to native and non-native English speaking students is varied. Using collaborative teaching methods, I help writers improve their skills while working as a team. Using a global approach, improving English grammar can be a fun experience working with me. I use a variety of essay topics and we will strengthen vocabulary, sentence structure, and grammar, through a series of interactive techniques. Improving English grammar can be fun!

Microsoft PowerPoint

PowerPoint can be fun. I'll show you how to create an awesome presentation, complete with multi-media and a variety of other features. You will have the best presentation in your class after working with me. I will teach you exactly how much information to include on your slides and how to organize your presentation for a great speech. I also provide feedback to those who wish to hire me as their first audience. I will show you how to rehearse independently to keep your speech within the designated time allowance. Trust me, this is important.

I have used the hooked on phonics techniques to teach my own children to speak English at a young age. I prefer to use flashcards and recordings which enhance the opportunity for the student to have repetition which leads to better recall.

My experience includes teaching junior legal secretaries to proofread legal documents, tutoring UCF students in proofreading techniques, and working with ESL students learning to proofread English research papers.

Additionally, my trained proofreading eyes will catch any and all typographical errors, misspellings, and missing punctuation! Professional experience includes proofreading financial statements while employed by KPMG, proofreading legal documents while employed as a legal assistant as well as proofreading engineering equations in government proposals. No legal document, manuscript, or research paper is too complicated or lengthy for me. Supervising two word processing departments and managing over 400 litigation cases, I worked full-time more than 6 years proofing professional documents.

I was trained by tax attorneys and accountants to create, proofread, and consistently publish perfect documents for national corporate clientele. I am certified to tutor in proofreading.

I can tutor any age in reading, including those learning English as a second language. My academic strengths are in reading, writing, spelling and grammar.

SAT Writing

My experience as an English writing tutor in a university writing center got me started. Now, I work part-time as a private tutor. Becoming a good writer is a process. Each writing assignment is one lesson in preparation for taking the SAT writing portion of the test. Practicing proper grammar and punctuation is a necessary part of the learning process. I provide structured and collaborative writing exercises that will improve any student's writing skills, at any stage of the writing process.

My tutoring experience includes teaching public speaking/speech and presentation skills. As a competent communicator and professional tutor, I provide tools for speech organization, rhetorical analysis, and delivery. My background includes tutoring individuals for solo and group speech projects. I also provide excellent feedback and suggestions for improving presentation slide content, speech outlines, and public speaking skills.

Spelling is a very important subject which should be mastered as early as possible. I have used different methods for teaching spelling to children. I emphasize the use of phonics and rhymes for teaching exceptions. The English language is complicated. As a native English speaker and writer, I am well equipped to improve any student's spelling skills.

Vocabulary for the elementary aged child is essential for building a strong foundation. A variety of methods can be used to teach vocabulary, some of which involve computer games, board games and the age old flash cards. Creative ways in which I engage elementary children include labeling games and drawings with seasonal themes. For ADULTS, I am happy to provide assistance in MEDICAL or LEGAL terminology. I maintain a library with both Black's Law Dictionary and a current Medical Dictionary. Custom crossword puzzles and other assignments are available to challenge you in expanding your chosen profession's vocabulary. I also assist non-native English speaking students with increasing vocabulary, through writing and conversational techniques. Increasing vocabulary can be fun!

I am knowledgeable and willing to assist you in improving your writing skills. I have experience with MLA, APA and Chicago style citations and help each writer improve what has been written at any stage of the writing process. Bring your writing assignment, ideas, and laptop and I will inspire you to write your best work!

As a professional writing consultant, educated specifically to help others improve writing skills, it will be my pleasure to assist you with any writing project.
