About Vicki

As a native Floridian, I am celebrating 5 years of 100% positive feedback in Orlando. As a Professional Writing Consultant and TEFL Certified English Language Teacher, citizens of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Venezuela, along with new Orlando residents from the Dominican Republic, Ukraine, and Puerto Rico, have benefited from sessions with me. My work has taken me across Central Florida, including Oviedo, Lake Nona, Windermere, Lake Mary, and East Orlando, at UCF. Please review my profile to determine the best fit for you and your needs.

My Qualifications:
Graduating summa cum laude in 2015 with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Rollins College Hamilton Holt School, I was also awarded two Certificates of Academic Achievement. I achieved the highest score available for the International Diploma for English Language Teaching from Bridge Education in association with the University of Northern Colorado. This Certification, along with a Bachelor’s degree, qualifies me to teach all ages, children and adults, for academic, personal, or business purposes. (I am also “certified” by Wyzant, but my education, training, and experience is broad, far beyond minimum requirements).

I have privately been teaching and tutoring since 2012. I completed my credentials while attending college as a non-traditional student, working as a peer writing consultant. Then the UCF University Writing Center Director, Mark Hall, recommended that I pursue private writing consulting, after we had several UCF students request to meet with me outside of the UWC. With his blessing, I was able to earn more money while meeting with students next door, in the cafe! As my small business expanded, I began traveling to three counties to serve as a writing consultant to students of all ages.

Note: As a former paid employee in two University Writing Centers, my job as a UCF Writing Consultant included completing the course and practicum and learning how to assist many native and non-native writers, and several professional nurses with their final research papers in the busy UWC on the Main UCF campus in Orlando. Each of my university writing consultations was critiqued and carefully monitored.

Best practices were learned while at UCF and how to specifically assist ESL writers, since the writing centers were filled with international students daily. This seven-month experience was an invaluable education in assisting and collaborating with writers, with varying degrees of English language acquisition, across the curriculum. This piqued my interest in working with English second language students. I also volunteered during summer sessions at the English Institute at UCF, helping many adult students who were learning English for the very first time. As a Conversation Partner, I led small group (4-9 students) in discussions about American culture and common idioms.

I’m a professional and this is my full time profession. I am a published writer, with top scoring English language credentials, and dozens of positive feedback references available for your review. This website offers a variety of tutoring opportunities. Please review profiles carefully for the best match for your needs. Top academic English writing tutors have completed writing portfolios during university studies in preparation for careers in professional writing and English language teaching. Additional references and positive feedback are available upon request. I am a professional writer and editor with experience in technical and creative writing. My work has been published on various websites. I look forward to your inquiry and hope to meet you soon. Please register and email me today for your first appointment. If you have any questions about this process, please write to me and I will assist you in scheduling an appointment.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am certified for tutoring elementary math, science, reading, spelling and vocabulary. I enjoy teaching these subjects in creative ways, including engaging students in writing short stories using their own drawings. I find that young children learn more when they are having fun, not being pressured. Labeling exercises and short questions and answers enable me to keep a student engaged in learning each subject.

Elementary Math

I am certified to tutor Elementary (K-6th)math including: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Elementary Science

I am certified to tutor Elementary (K-6th)Science. This is one of my favorite subjects. I am enthusiastic and enjoy conveying my love of science to children.

English

I hold a BA from Rollins College and graduated summa cum laude. This is important because I minored in English Writing and have extensive experience writing essays, creative stories, technical reports, and helping others to improve their writing skills. As a native English speaking resident, I have been employed as a university writing center tutor with UCF. I've also privately tutored English and writing since 2012. The students I've worked with have all achieved high scores on English writing assignments. I work with native and non-native English speaking students.

ESL/ESOL

My experience includes volunteer work as a conversation partner with adult and college students at the Multilingual, Multicultural Center at the UCF main campus in Orlando. I have also provided writing tutoring for college students from the continent of Asia, the Mediterranean region, Europe, South America, the West Indies, and several of the Caribbean Islands. Some of the countries students originated from include: Brazil, Columbia, Venezuela, Japan, China, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, Taiwan, Korea, Kazakhstan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, India, Germany, Dominican Republic, Haiti, and Jamaica. I thoroughly enjoy conversations and tutoring sessions with students of all nationalities. As a native English speaker and writer, I can assist in increasing vocabulary, learning basic English grammar and providing engaging discussions and lessons. My education includes a writing consulting theory and practice course with a lab in which I studied ESL/ESOL tutoring, also gaining valuable experience tutoring in the UCF Center for Writing Excellence. I love tutoring English and use collaborative learning methods for improving one's conversation and writing skills. Learning English can be fun!

Grammar

Having studied English grammar and assisted others to improve writing skills in university writing centers, I am certified to tutor English grammar for children and adults. My experience teaching high school and college essay writing to native and non-native English speaking students is varied. Using collaborative teaching methods, I help writers improve their skills while working as a team. Using a global approach, improving English grammar can be a fun experience working with me. I use a variety of essay topics and we will strengthen vocabulary, sentence structure, and grammar, through a series of interactive techniques. Improving English grammar can be fun!

Microsoft PowerPoint

PowerPoint can be fun. I'll show you how to create an awesome presentation, complete with multi-media and a variety of other features. You will have the best presentation in your class after working with me. I will teach you exactly how much information to include on your slides and how to organize your presentation for a great speech. I also provide feedback to those who wish to hire me as their first audience. I will show you how to rehearse independently to keep your speech within the designated time allowance. Trust me, this is important.

Phonics

I have used the hooked on phonics techniques to teach my own children to speak English at a young age. I prefer to use flashcards and recordings which enhance the opportunity for the student to have repetition which leads to better recall.

Proofreading

My experience includes teaching junior legal secretaries to proofread legal documents, tutoring UCF students in proofreading techniques, and working with ESL students learning to proofread English research papers.

Additionally, my trained proofreading eyes will catch any and all typographical errors, misspellings, and missing punctuation! Professional experience includes proofreading financial statements while employed by KPMG, proofreading legal documents while employed as a legal assistant as well as proofreading engineering equations in government proposals. No legal document, manuscript, or research paper is too complicated or lengthy for me. Supervising two word processing departments and managing over 400 litigation cases, I worked full-time more than 6 years proofing professional documents.

I was trained by tax attorneys and accountants to create, proofread, and consistently publish perfect documents for national corporate clientele. I am certified to tutor in proofreading.

Reading

I can tutor any age in reading, including those learning English as a second language. My academic strengths are in reading, writing, spelling and grammar.

SAT Writing

My experience as an English writing tutor in a university writing center got me started. Now, I work part-time as a private tutor. Becoming a good writer is a process. Each writing assignment is one lesson in preparation for taking the SAT writing portion of the test. Practicing proper grammar and punctuation is a necessary part of the learning process. I provide structured and collaborative writing exercises that will improve any student's writing skills, at any stage of the writing process.

Speech

My tutoring experience includes teaching public speaking/speech and presentation skills. As a competent communicator and professional tutor, I provide tools for speech organization, rhetorical analysis, and delivery. My background includes tutoring individuals for solo and group speech projects. I also provide excellent feedback and suggestions for improving presentation slide content, speech outlines, and public speaking skills.

Spelling

Spelling is a very important subject which should be mastered as early as possible. I have used different methods for teaching spelling to children. I emphasize the use of phonics and rhymes for teaching exceptions. The English language is complicated. As a native English speaker and writer, I am well equipped to improve any student's spelling skills.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary for the elementary aged child is essential for building a strong foundation. A variety of methods can be used to teach vocabulary, some of which involve computer games, board games and the age old flash cards. Creative ways in which I engage elementary children include labeling games and drawings with seasonal themes. For ADULTS, I am happy to provide assistance in MEDICAL or LEGAL terminology. I maintain a library with both Black's Law Dictionary and a current Medical Dictionary. Custom crossword puzzles and other assignments are available to challenge you in expanding your chosen profession's vocabulary. I also assist non-native English speaking students with increasing vocabulary, through writing and conversational techniques. Increasing vocabulary can be fun!

Writing

I am knowledgeable and willing to assist you in improving your writing skills. I have experience with MLA, APA and Chicago style citations and help each writer improve what has been written at any stage of the writing process. Bring your writing assignment, ideas, and laptop and I will inspire you to write your best work!

As a professional writing consultant, educated specifically to help others improve writing skills, it will be my pleasure to assist you with any writing project.
