I was born in Brazil and lived in that country for 50 years. I majored in Portuguese Language and Literature at Universidade de São Paulo and was a teacher in public schools for 22 years. In 2002, I moved to the United States of America.
Here, I have been working as a Portuguese tutor in the Orlando area for the last few years. I was also a Portuguese teacher for a group of students at Centro Assistencial Nova Esperança. Recently, I was hired to be a teacher and organize the Portuguese course for Winter Park University (including writing the textbooks for the whole course).
I often translate essays from English to Portuguese for professors of UT, as well as commercial brochures for companies doing business with Brazil. From time to time, I write articles for the Brazilian newspaper Nossa Gente in Orlando and I am also author of several books, including fiction and textbooks. Great instructor! Very punctual and professional. If you want to learn to speak Portuguese...I highly recommend Flavio! He has a lot of experience and is very patient !
I am a teacher and as such my standards for learning and teaching may be higher than other language students. Also, I teach ELL students, so this adds to my criteria when I am choosing a language tutor. Flavio has exceeded my expectations and his professionalism, subject knowledge as well as his background as a former teacher in Brazil, all combine to make him an amazing tutor!
After only two lessons with Mr. Flavio, I knew he was an incredible teacher. He was very patient in explaining the words and meanings behind the words. He was even patient in understanding my busy work schedule and the fact that I had a newborn at home and our lesson times would have to work around the hiccups of all of that! Talk about prepared - he has incredible lesson plans and you get a sense that you are almost sitting in a University classroom.
In just two weeks I feel as if I have learned so much and I am looking forward to many more lessons to come. I would recommend that anyone who is interested in learning to speak Portuguese - to give Mr. Flavio a try. I promise you will not be disappointed.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
