In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I hold a Masters in the Arts of Teaching - Elementary Education. I've been trained to teach and have taught self-contained K-7 classes here in Orlando, FL. I am well-trained in and have implemented contemporary practices such as Multiple Intelligences Theory, Cooperative Learning, Higher Order Thinking Skills, Technology Integration and Diversity.
Presently, I am working as an instructor teaching Intensive English Programs at Global Languages, Orlando, FL. Plus I also teach English for Academic Purposes classes to Non-Native Speakers of English at Valencia Comm. College, Orlando, FL.
I've taught in a self-contained multi-grade 6 & 7 classroom for about a year in a private school. The following year I was a 1st grade teacher at Central Florida Prep School and taught all subjects except for Spanish and Music. I've tutored several student from K-12 and prepared them for FCAT. I've been a substitute teacher K-12 for the last 10 year while I was completing my degree in New Jersey.
While completing my Masters in the Arts of Teaching at William Paterson University in New Jersey, I had to complete some elective coursework in order for completion of my degree. Therefore, I elected to complete a minor in Linguistics. As, I took the first few courses in General and Applied Linguistics; I realized that I would enjoy teaching ESL/ESOL courses. Since, I am multilingual and multicultural, the opportunity to hear different languages and learn about different cultures from my students would be a unique opportunity. I've enrolled in many courses on how to teach ESOL/ESL students. For example following are the list of courses I've completed:
General Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Private and Public Languages, Languages and Cultures, Heritage Languages vs. Native Languages, Teaching grammar and pronunciation to non-native speakers of English. I've been teaching E.S.L. classes and Intensive English Classes for the last 5 years in New Jersey and Florida, and have had ample experience teaching students from all over the world. Presently, I teach at Global Languages which is associated with Valencia Community College. I've prepared my students for LOEP and TOEFL and have been very successful with their results. I've also had the opportunity to create courses which are currently being taught at Valencia. Which are: English Pronunciation, American Media and Culture, Cross-Cultural Customer Service, Introduction to Diversity and LOEP. As I teach my students, I learn them too!
Public Speaking is an important skill to learn and it benefits greatly especially in a person's professional life. In my classes, I always assign students to start sharing their essays or written paragraphs so that these students becoming comfortable in front of an audience. I've had students who initially do not want to stand up in front of their classmates to share their written essays, but I make it mandatory and inform the students that presenting is part of their grades. Many times the same reluctant students want to share a lot more with their classmates and start integrating multi-media to accompany their topics.
My students start feeling at ease once they know that they don't have to memorize the written content, but just present it. Once these students overcome the shyness of being infront of an audience, great effort is put in and these students have always excelled in their presentations. Overcoming the fear of public speaking boosts people's confidence and gives them a sense of achievement when they research their topic and present it to the class. I created curriculum for a class known as American Media and Public Speaking, which is presently being taught at Valencia. In this class, students read various subjects related to daily news and then are assigned to present a similar topic related to their country. Everytime the students have to present material related to their native country, these students feel comfortable because they are familiar with the topics. I've had elections in my classroom where the students had to deliver "Nominate Me" speech and we held debated on various topics. It is amazing how all students get involved in it after the initial shyness is overcome.
