About Ruby

I have honed my specialized skills for 25 years while teaching at colleges and universities in three states. Writing is my first love, but teaching is my passion. It is pure joy to watch the progress my students make when the light bulb starts to shine, and they realize that writing is not as difficult as they once thought. One goal is to keep learning easy. My students often say I make it “fun.”

About five years ago many of my students continuously encouraged me to publish a grammar book, so I did. It is a quick, study guide to some of the most common writing dilemmas. I recently returned to graduate school not only to earn another advanced degree, but to ensure my writing skills and knowledge of the rules of punctuation keep pace with this fast-changing society.

My focus is teaching high school or college students(and beyond) how to write. This includes organizing and formatting paragraphs, essays, reports and research writing. One must know how to combine sentences using the correct elements, length and structure. Each student has an individual learning plan based on need, which is first defined. Then the needed learning concept is explained until the student understands it. Practice verifies clarity. Quick homework checks accompany each session. Sessions include intermittent, short quizzes to check milestones reached. These signposts are not always in the form of pen and paper. Once they have begun to grasp and apply concepts, I encourage my students to bring a laptop for interactive learning. I pride myself on being clear and keeping learning easy to understand and stress free.

The time we schedule together is specifically for that student. However, I understand schedules sometimes change. My policy is a 24-hour cancellation notice via email.

I meet my students at a university or public library convenient to their location. During our first meeting, we confirm that the fit is a good one before forging ahead with our learning.

It has been a pleasure to share a bit about me and how I can help you meet your learning goals.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

For more than 25 years, I have taught English at colleges and universities in California, Indiana and Florida. During the past ten years, I have also taught online. My Master's degree is in Communication and English.

ESL/ESOL

Because I have taught college English and writing classes in California and now Florida, many of my students have been most diverse.

I welcome the opportunity to work with ESOL students.

Grammar

One cannot teach English without teaching grammar, as well. I have taught both for more than 25 years at colleges in three states and online. My Master's degree is in Communication and English. I tutor college and some high school students in this subject.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I have used PowerPoint for 12 years in corporate and academic situations. As an instructor, PowerPoint is part of my weekly curriculum of interactive classroom education. As an online instructor, it is mandatory that I know PowerPoint to better guide my students in their own presentation projects.

Microsoft Word

I have used Microsoft Word since its inception. I have been certified in this program each time a new edition is launched. As an educator, it is mandatory. Colleges and universities also offer in-house and mandatory training for these editions.

Proofreading

I consider myself an expert proofreading and writing instructor. I have honed my skills by editing numerous academic papers for more than 25 years. I also take pride in remaining current on the acceptable punctuation and grammar in today's ever changing society. I do this by taking graduate English courses on editing and proofing.

Public Speaking

I earned a master's degree in communication and English. I have taught public speaking and speech both online and in the classroom for five years. I worked in corporate America for a decade as a communication's consultant, which required that I coordinate and present at global management meetings.

Reading

I have a master's in English. I have taught college English, composition, and reading for 25 years in three states. I currently teach reading comprehension, critical thinking and writing, as each applies to essays, stories and understanding and the author's intended meaning.

Students must first, read for understanding of grammar and word use. Next, a clear understanding is needed of the passage. Finally, the students must critically think through the material. This means walk through the author's intended meaning to identify purpose.

This walk through, no pressure method leads to a gain in reading understanding.

Study Skills

I have taught college success, which is a focus on study skills, time management and understanding how an individual learns best.

Some students learn best with music in their ears while others need absolute quiet time at the top and in the back of the library to focus. Some attempt to do everything at once without prioritizing assignments and managing work and other responsibilities. Some students have never considered how they learn best. A student must understand what s/he needs to successfully complete assignments and the type of environment (and other variables) in which to do it. Such knowledge makes the difference between success/failure.

Writing

Writing is my passion. I earned an undergraduate degree in journalism and worked as a professional newspaper reporter before returning to school to earn a Master's degree in English and communication. I have taught academic and personal writing at colleges, universities and privately for 25 years.
