Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

ADD & ADHD are a part of education in Florida, especially in a Title I school with many students diagnosed with one of the above. Understanding the inability to focus and quick speed of their brain is imperative. In Florida, I obtained a teaching certificate with ESE K-12 certification from Department of Education after completing hundreds of hours in online courses as well as 13 years of public school education with hundreds of students with ADD or ADHD. I also have a Bachelor's in French from University of Florida with a minor in education and a Master's in Educational Leadership from University of Scranton.

Adobe InDesign

As the yearbook creator for several years, I used InDesign to create pages from scratch as well as editing templates. With each yearbook over 75 pages, it was a daunting task. I also taught over 20 students per year how to use the program.

Aspergers

Understanding the broad abilities of students with Aspergers is imperative. With a family member diagnosed, it was important to learn everything I could about it so I researched countless hours. This has led to many of the higher functioning Aspergers students in my school being placed in French and/or Critical Thinking with me because I understand the abilities and how to work within the boundaries and limitations. In Florida, I obtained a teaching certificate with ESE K-12 certification from Department of Education after completing hundreds of hours in online courses as well as 13 years of public school education with many students of all abilities. I also have a Bachelor's in French from University of Florida with a minor in education and a Master's in Educational Leadership from University of Scranton.

Autism

Understanding the broad abilities of students with Autism is imperative. Understanding how to work around this sometimes challenging disorder helps me to be a better teacher. This has led to many of the Autistic students being placed in my Critical Thinking courses because I understand the abilities and how to work within the boundaries and limitations. One of my favorite students was actually autistic and she had always wanted to learn another language. Together we worked after school so that she could have private French lessons at her pace with her abilities shining. We sang songs and studied in ways that worked for her. She may not have been fluent in her few months, but she loved the lessons and they were tailored to her.

Dyslexia

Dyslexia is a frustrating diagnosis for many students. They find reading an uphill battle and it is one that they don't want to tackle even on the best days because it often leads to confusion and lack of understanding the material. There are some great tricks that I have learned over the years of teaching English & Reading that have served me, and my dyslexic students well. Did you know that if you bump your fists together with thumbs up it makes a "bad" sign because it's annoying to be dyslexic. This shows which way a b faces and which way a d faces. Cool, right?

French

I have a Bachelor's degree with a French major from the University of Florida. I have 7 years experience teaching French in Sarasota County and 4 years teaching French in Collier County. I also have experience living in Avignon, France and have taken multiple vacations and have traveled in France.

General Computer

Okay, so I'm a bit of a computer geek, well more than a bit. I may not be able to afford the latest and greatest technology as soon as it comes out, but you better believe I am all about using everything that I have to its utmost potential. I'm also a teacher, of 13 years, so I'm the perfect person to help you learn how to do what you want and teach it to you in a variety of ways until we find what works for you. I'm ready to help you learn the magical world of computers!

Microsoft Excel

Excel is a program that utilizes the world of Math and the world of technology and pairs them to make life easier. This program is designed to do your dirty work and I'm just the person to teach you all about it. I have used Excel for tracking data, finances, create organizational tables, and lots more for many years. In education, I have actually taught some of the magic with personal finance sheets and other great uses. With over 13 years of experience in teaching, I'm ready to help you learn in the way that works best for you!

Microsoft PowerPoint

PowerPoint is a program designed to help you present your ideas in a visual manner to others. There are many "bells & whistles" but there are also some very important pitfalls in the creation that newbies often make. For example, don't add long sound if you're going to be speaking because it will make you lose your momentum. Don't add time-consuming transitions if you have a limited amount of time to present. Don't add long-winded sentences if you're verbally adding to the presentation because you'll read. There are so many others, but here are a few to think about as you create your masterpiece.

Microsoft Word

Word is a program designed to help your document come to life. There are so many functions that can be used to create everything from a newsletter to a poster. This program has it all and I know how to use the advanced functions. With over 13 years in education, I'm ready to share the magic of Word in a way that works for your learning style.

QuickBooks

At the University of Florida I was the head accountant in one of the departments. During my time there, I not only reorganized, but also taught three other accountants who worked for me how to use QuickBooks.

As a private business owner, I utilize QuickBooks daily. I setup the account and utilize the software to its full-potential. QB is used to track expenses, invoices, sales receipts, sales tax, and much more. I also utilize the many reports for monitoring sales and expenses as well as overall performance for the business.

Special Needs

Teaching is about doing what is best for every student. Private tutoring is even more important to tailor lessons for each student's abilities. It is important, especially with special needs students, to focus on the abilities and what the student can do to build the best lessons possible while building the student's inabilities into abilities.

In Florida, I obtained a teaching certificate with ESE K-12 certification from Department of Education after completing hundreds of hours in online courses as well as 13 years of public school education with many students of all abilities. Study Skills

With over 12 years of teaching experience in public schools, I know that learning must be individualized to the learner. Often times, students needed assistance to determine their learning style and then what that means to their learning. 4 hours of studying a written page of notes will not help an auditory learner!

Beginning with the multiple intelligence inventory to assess what is most enjoyable to the learner, it is likely that the student will gain a greater knowledge of his/her interests and study skills. That information is then used to help the person discover the MANY ways that they will learn easiest. For example, spelling is challenging but for an auditory learner, saying it out loud makes all the difference in the world! Simple guidance that is individualized helps the student to feel more in control of his/her learning!
