About Kelley

I have a Bachelor's degree in Education of the Trainable Mentally Handicapped. My first job was teaching home-based special needs pre-schoolers - special needs in mental, physical, emotional, and behavioral areas. I also worked with parents to teach them how to best help with their child's development. I was certified in teaching students with learning disabilities and did that for 13 years.

As stated, I have been tutoring since 2003 and I love the individual attention I can give my students in that situation. We are able to use homework to solidly learn and review skills, and extra materials to approach skills which need to be retaught.

I am a former teacher of students with learning disabilities, so I excel at teaching skills in many different ways (auditory, visual, tactile, etc.). I like to be creative and have fun when it is possible! I'm positive and facilitate growth in self-esteem, and we celebrate each mastery achieved.

I've taught elementary math for 23 years with success! I've also been through many training and use a variety of manipulatives and games that students enjoy.

I am an exceptional Reading tutor because I have a degree in reading diagnostics and remediation. Also I have been teaching and remediating reading and language skills for 27 years with great success. I teach vocabulary through reading and with games. I believe children read better by practicing, so I set up rewards for meeting goals.

I taught in an elementary classroom for eleven years, and have tutored children of all ages for thirteen years. I teach solid study skills that improve student success and daily performance. I am proficient in Reading, English, Math, Science & Biology, History, Health, and am learning to speak Spanish!

I would love to send you my resume so that you can learn more about my background! Feel free to contact me anytime!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have a BA and an MA in special education and reading diagnostics/remediation. I am also certified in teaching students with learning disabilities. I have learned and put into practice many educational and behavioral strategies which address the issues associated with ADD/ADHD. I am also extremely patient, kind, positive, and respectful of students' self-esteem.

Aspergers

I have a Bachelor's degree in Exceptional Student Education and studied the Autism Spectrum in great detail. I learned the best teaching practices to use and have put them to use in most of my teaching jobs. Specifically, I taught preschoolers and elementary students with Aspergers Syndrome.

Dyslexia

I have a BA in Exceptional Student Education and an MA in Reading Diagnostics and Remediation. I have certification in Learning Disabilities as well. I taught elementary and high school students with dyslexia in a classroom setting, and have tutored many students with Learning Disabilities.

Elementary (K-6th)

My education includes a degree in elementary education and exceptional student education. I taught elementary students - all subjects - in both a resource room (K - 5th grades) and team teaching (4th and 5th grades) for many years. I've been identified as a "Master Teacher" in both of those situations.

Handwriting

I have degrees in elementary and exceptional student education. While studying, I learned best teaching practices for instruction in handwriting. I taught it to K-1 students in my role as an educator of elementary students with and without learning disabilities, and have worked with older students on improving their letter and word formation. I have worked closely with Occupational Therapists on assisting children with writing difficulties as well.

Phonics

I spent 10 years teaching phonics to elementary students. I have even created my own phonics program while working on my Master's degree.
