Hi, my name is Joyce. I am a retired teacher of elementary education (1-6) and special education (K-9). For the past seven years, I have been tutoring in the New Smyrna area. I specialize in remedial reading and improved study skills to include writing and math. I also emphasize the importance of reading specialized texts in other subjects to improve understanding (science, social studies). My philosophy is that each and every student has his/her own approach to learning. Finding that approach and enhancing upon it gives students an ownership of their learning process. That is my intent with each student.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As a teacher, I was certified in Special Needs (PreK-9) and Elementary Education (1-6). Since retiring, I have been tutoring in the 'No Child Left Behind' tutoring program. Throughout the years, I have worked with many ADD/ADHD students both modifying and implementing learning plans for individual student's needs. I have worked with individual students, small groups, and in inclusion classrooms.
I am a retired special needs and reading teacher for Grades K-6. I have been tutoring reading and math for the "No Child Left Behind" program in the New Smyrna Beach area since 2005. My teaching methods scaffold the student's prior knowledge and identify gaps in learning to form a stronger learning platform.
As a teacher, I was certified in Special Needs (PreK-9) and Elementary Education (1-6). During that time I worked in reading programs, such as 'Project Read' and 'Wilson.' As a tutor, I was implementing the 'Dibels' program. All programs worked on high frequency words, word families, phonograms, nonsense words, short and long vowels, diagraphs and multisyllabic words to improve phonic awareness.
I cover all aspects of reading that are needed by the student to include fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, phonics, guided reading, choral reading... Building concepts, such as, predicting, applying prior knowledge, making inferences, cause and effect, recognizing story elements... All grade appropriate.
As a teacher, I was certified in Special Needs (PreK-9) and Elementary Education (1-6). Since retiring, I have tutored in the 'No Child Left Behind' program in both reading and math using phonetics and fluency to improve comprehension. I have worked in 'Life Skills' classrooms, as well as inclusion and separate classroom programs. I have modified and implemented learning plans for individual student's needs in all of these programs.
My background in teaching is special needs. While working in school systems, I have organized and worked in various centers to improve study skills. I have also been tutoring for 'No Child Left Behind' (2205-2012) and currently in the AVID Program. Both programs promote organization and critical thinking as a premise to improve a student's learning experience.
