I tutor students from high school to graduate school in English, literature, essay writing, dissertation revision, research techniques, and study skills.
From years of experience as certified Adjunct Faculty at the College of Southern Maryland teaching Composition and Rhetoric, I understand faculty expectations and learning differences. I began tutoring in the 1980's and have also used my English skills in the business world to write grants, develop curricula, and create program manuals for non-profits. Due to my continuing education work with the Duval County School system, I have a complete background check, which can be furnished upon request along with my credentials and recommendations.
My focus is on creating personalized action plans that foster students' confidence, so they become motivated to continue to hone their skills independently. Testimonials are also available upon request. Students may choose their most conducive learning environment for tutoring at either my office, the Beaches Branch Public Library, or a local coffee shop.
I look forward to hearing from you to discuss how we may reach your unique learning goals with a dynamic and efficient plan of action. I tutor students from high school to graduate school in English, literature, essay writing, dissertation revision, research techniques, and study skills.

There are no refunds for scheduled lessons. However, in months with five weeks, the fifth week's session can be used as a make-up lesson or is offered as a free bonus when no make-up is needed.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have tutored students at the Beaches School, Providence School, Kaplan University, Howard University, the College of Southern Maryland, as well as in public schools. Because of my years of experience teaching college English courses, I understand faculty expectations and learning differences. Designing an individualized learning program to help students exceed their goals is my specialty.
By using Dr. Smilkstein's Brain-Based Natural Learning Process during grammar tutoring, tutees improve confidence, motivation, and focus. Facilitating students' understanding of their personal learning styles and how to enhance comprehension, retention, and skills based on study techniques customized to their strengths also enhances their ability to gain life-long grammar skills.
Many students enjoy learning how the latest technology such as cloud computing, MS Word shortcuts, and Web 2.0 content can streamline their ability to produce essays with flawless grammar.
I studied Theology at the Catholic University of America and minored in Religious Studies at the University of Georgia. In Washington DC, I served as a catechist for students who were preparing for Baptism, First Communion, and Confermation. I also taught religion courses such as World Religions, History of the Church, and Spirituality at Saint Mary's Ryken High School in Leonardtown, Maryland.
From years of experience as Adjunct Faculty at the College of Southern Maryland teaching Composition and Rhetoric as well as Developmental English, I understand faculty expectations and learning differences. Throughout my career, I have also received recognition for specialized continuing education training in areas including Study Skills, Meta-cognition, Reading Fatigue, and more. I have an extensive collection of resources that enable students to succeed with a study skills program that focuses on their strengths and will serve them well in and outside of the classroom.
Ten years of experience in the non-profit sector writing grants, program manuals, and proposals adds real world experience to my tutoring. Besides tutoring students in my courses for developmental English, grammar, and essay writing during office hours as adjunct faculty at the College of Southern Maryland, I worked as a tutor for students writing papers for other courses through the College of Southern Maryland’s Student Success Program. Currently, my tutees use skills learned in our sessions to gain summer internships and improve academic performance.
