I was a first grade teacher for 12 years. I decided to go back to school myself so I am taking a break from the classroom.
However, I miss having students and teaching them. I tutored before school for three years and I also tutored outside of work for two years. Working one on one with a student is one of my favorite things. I am able to customize the lessons to exactly what my student needs.
Ever since I was a little girl, math has been my favorite subject. When I am tutoring, I like to use several different methods. Using math manipulatives is a fun hands on learning method. When teaching addition and subtraction, I teach several different methods and find the best method for my student. Speed drills and games are one way to check for comprehension and they are fun to do.
In the past 12 years of teaching first grade, I have learned different ways to teach grammar, literature, and reading. Learning these different areas of English can be done using a hands on approach along with writing activities. Everyone learns in different ways. It is important to use several different methods when teaching. I have learned these methods.
When common core was introduced to my district, I was on the internet learning everything I could about common core. I researched the standards and created a database of examples for each one. I have also had numerous professional development training courses of the past few years. When I am introduced to materials that I am not familiar with, I will do everything I can to learn it and become an expert.
Teaching children is my absolutely favorite thing to do. Working one on one with a student lets me get to know her/him and how she/he learns. Once this has been established, lessons are planned and activities are created. I was a first grade teacher for 12 years. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My last four years of teaching first grade, our district used the Common Core standards. After being trained and doing my own research, I taught my students reading, grammar, literature, and math using these standards. If our current curriculum did not fit Common Core Standards, I would either find or create an activity to verify my students knowledge. I have created binders containing examples of each Common Core Standard. These are used as a tool to verify that my curriculum was used.
For the past 12 years I have taught first grade. I taught all subject areas. I am a certified teacher with a bachelor's degree in elementary education. I also have a master's degree in curriculum and instruction. Every year I have been evaluated as a highly effective teacher. During the day, I teach whole groups, small groups, and one on one. I have all materials needed to help students in reading and math.
For the past 12 years I have taught first grade. It was very important for my students to learn phonics. A whole group of phonics was taught on a daily basis. During small reading group time, my students were in groups based on their abilities. In the small groups, I was able to narrow in on specific phonic areas the group needed. They would be monitored and evaluated on a ongoing basis to move to the next level.
While teaching reading to my first graders, I would have.4 students at a time in small groups. Within this small group, I would teach my students the tools they needed to comprehend the story and be able to answer questions. I also taught them other areas of reading.
For the past 12 years I have taught first grade. I taught all Subject areas. Part of my teaching is teaching students study skills. I help them by showing them how effective note cards are. I've taught them.how to find the main idea and details in paragraphs. The students then transfer them onto flashcards for studying. Besides flashcards, I have showed them a variety of different ways to study. The variety is helpful because not all students learn the same way.
