I am a retired elementary school teacher and retired military instructor. I enjoy teaching and have a Florida certification in General Education, Specific Learning Disabilities and Gifted. The one thing that all of my students tell me is, “you’re funny”. That, in fact is my goal, to make learning fun! The biggest paycheck a teacher can get is when the “light bulb” goes on! I have taught second, third, fourth and fifth grades and my favorite students were second graders. While I was teaching I “volunteered” to tutor many of my students basically to allow for flexible parent scheduling and I believe the students really enjoyed the relaxed environment and their test scores spoke for themselves. I can honestly say with great pride, during my teaching career none of my students failed a grade. I truly believe all students can learn and it’s up to the teacher to find the best strategy to make that happen.
Before I retired my students and parents nominated me for teacher of the month on a local radio channel and you guessed it, I was selected!! The best part of the award was when they came to my classroom and all the students cheered and we shared a large editable arrangement. Can you guess what grade I was teaching? Second! I was also selected as the Teacher of the Year; Air Force Association as an elementary school teacher. Not only did I teach for a living, I have taught Vacation Bible School (VBS), for First Baptist of Navarre, and Mary Esther, the Approved Workman Are Not Ashamed (AWANA) Programs, Instructor for 3rd and /4th grade, Sunday School Director, Volunteer, Vacation Bible School for our Youth (6-8th grades), First Baptist Church of Navarre.
My favorite subjects to teach are Math and Science. When the opportunity presented itself, I was the first one to volunteer to teach math all day long. As history would have it, all of my students earned promotion to the next grade.
Math vocabulary is crucial to understanding concepts and especially word problems. Many students can add and subtract, however if they don’t understand what the words mean, odds are the question will answered incorrectly. I have several different strategies to learn vocabulary, but the student’s favorite is “acting” the words out. Retention is greatly increased when students can associate and action with a word and they love it!
Well, I've told you a little about me, now it's time for you to share information about you. The only things I know are that you live in Navarre (so do I) and you could use some help in math. I will be glad to provide assistance and I hope you enjoyed reading my information and I look forward to hearing from you very soon. Please contact me so we can set up a schedule that will work for everyone. I am a retired elementary school teacher and retired military instructor. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught second, third, fourth and fifth grade and my favorite students were second graders. The latest math curriculum I have used was "Go Math". Assessments: Discovery Education Assessment (DEA), Florida Student Assessment (FSA). Results: Continually had the best scores on the grade level and I can proudly say since I've been teaching elementary school, all my students earned promotion.
